Call it the anti-March of the Penguins, the great German madman’s documentary about Antarctica and the unique population of scientists and wanderers who live there is a fascinating portrait of extremes, both natural and human. Herzog’s pessimistic worldview is clearly on display, as his inherent curiosity—the thing that drives him to make his always intriguing and sometimes deeply disturbing films, both fictional and documentary—tends to reify his fatalism, which is here encapsulated in a heartrending image of a misdirected penguin wandering inland to certain death.
