Count Yorga, Vampire (Bob Kelljan, 1970)

Count Yorga, Vampire (Bob Kelljan, 1970)One of the first of the low-budget vampires-in-the-modern-world flicks that were popular on the drive-in circuit in the early 1970s, Count Yorga, Vampire is fairly slow going in its opening reel, but it picks up quite nicely when a woman who has been the recipient of some neck love from the titular Bulgarian bloodsucker is discovered eating a kitten raw. Eating … a kitten … raw. That scene aside, the film is fairly tame for its genre, but Kelljan makes the most of his limited sets and even more limited actors, with the exception of the inimitable Robert Quarry, who brings a beautifully arrogant air of menace to the Count, playing that fine line between severity and spoof with casual refinement.
