Get Smart (Peter Segal, 2008)

Get Smart (Peter Segal, 2008)Dusting off Cold War-era television and remaking it into a broad-based action comedy sounds like a really bad idea on paper, but the talent behind Get Smart makes the material work by sheer force of will. Turning the idiotic, egotistical, and ironically named Maxwell Smart into an intelligent analyst-turned-bumbling field agent was a good move as it allows Steve Carell to play up his comedic strengths, and his chemistry with Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 is refreshingly effective, which turns their potentially stale mutual antagonism as slow dance to romance into a genuinely comedic he said/she said showdown. And, let’s just be honest: Dwayne “Don’t Call Me The Rock” Johnson has genuine comic timing. (Hollywood Jewel 16, Waco, TX)Â
