More of an overpriced show-off piece for the size and scope of the Zoetrope Studios soundstages than a movie proper, Francis Ford Coppola’s quasi-musical is a meticulously mounted film lover’s cavalcade of neon lighting, stylized production design, lengthy tracking shots, and lap dissolves, but its story about a humdrum couple (Frederic Forest and Teri Garr) falling out of love and looking for solace in the arms of others (Natassia Kinski and Raul Julia, respectively) in a fantasy version of Las Vegas is a paper-thin bore. The smoky barroom songs by Tom Waits are fantastic, though. (DVD)
