Harrison Ford’s rumpled, swashbuckling archaeologist is back, and 20 years older he’s gray and a bit grumpy, but he’s still in the game and capable of some amazing feats, which means that his character still plays that fanciful line between the impossible and the everyday. Unfortunately, the film is overrun by cartoonish CGI wizardry that is far too often marshaled as a stand-in for the kind of gritty stuntwork and location shooting that made the previous films so visceral and exciting. It has some deliriously fun chase sequences, and many of the jokes crackle, but its late-1950s sci-fi plotting and Cold War trappings, while intriguing in theory, don’t quite work.
