Iron Man (Jon Favreau, 2008)

Iron Man (Jon Favreau, 2008)Not quite a great superhero movie, but certainly a very good one, largely due to the casting of Robert Downey Jr., who seemed like an odd choice but proves to be essential in conveying his character’s transition from shallow industrialist playboy to a man who feels the weight of his responsibilities. Much of the film’s success is also due to director Jon Favreau, who does the anti-Michael Bay by hinging the film on story and character and letting the special effects play a supporting role. There is plenty of CGI action to go around, but it always enhances, rather than overwhelms. (Hollywood Jewel 16, Waco, TX)
