Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Nicholas Stoller, 2008)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Nicholas Stoller, 2008)One of the best entries from the Judd Apatow comedy-producing machine, Forgetting Sarah Marshall finds that near-perfect balance of two parts raunch to one part sweet. Jason Segel, who also wrote the screenplay, is just right as the likable everyman schlub trapped in a Hawaiian resort with his ex-girlfriend and her obnxious new British rocker boyfriend (played by previously unknown Russell Brand with a brilliantly nasty mix of obnoxious scuzz and undeniable charm). Of course, at the end of the day the film gives us the Hollywood male fantasy that, when a beautiful woman dumps you, there’s another beautiful and this time sensitive, caring, and understanding woman waiting to take her place, but the story’s fun is in wading through the often hilarious agony to get there.
