From perennially eclectic director Alberto Lattuada we get this nightmarishly funny comedy of manners about a very respectable Milanese auto factory foreman who takes his very blonde wife and even blonder young daughters back to his home village in Sicily, where he rediscovers just how deeply intertwined his family roots are with the local mafia. Alberto Sordi is perfectly cast as the affable protagonist, and Lattuada deftly plays a fine line in shifting the film’s tone from broad culture-clash comedy to fatalistic social drama without ever quite losing the story’s dark, cutting edge.
