Summerhood (Jacob Medjuck, 2008)

Summerhood (Jacob Medjuck, 2008)Medjuck’s feature debut is a slightly raunchy, but ultimately sweet-natured comedy about a kid with a small body and a big mind trying to navigate the choppy waters between childhood and adolescence. Set at a summer camp, it has all the obligatory scenes of childhood cutting up, but with an edge of realism we haven’t really seen since the original The Bad News Bears. Obviously a child of the ’80s, Medjuck loads the soundtrack with all kinds of great Reagan-era tunes, including Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian” and Level 42’s “Something About You,” as well as an absolutely hilarious and unexpected use of one of 2 Live’s Crew’s typically unprintable songs. Predictable in some areas, the film still works because Medjuck invests it with real heart, plus he has a real find in Lucian Maisel, who’s one of those kid actors who really sticks with you.
