Chinatown goes to high school. Funnier, but without the exacting, relentless internal logic of Rian Johnson’s superior Brick a few years back. Fans of Polanki’s classic neo-noir will appreciate the little details: Reese Thompon’s inept gumshow having his name constantly mispronunced (and nose busted), the is-she-or-isn’t-she-a-femme-fatale (Mischa Barton, badly cast), and the never-ending black hole of conspiracy whose discovery doesn’t solve a thing. Bruce Willis is amusing as a Gulf War veteran principle with a hatred for gum, but Michael Rapaport is criminally underutilized as the school’s basketball coach who “coached English for two seasons.” (Magnolia, Dallas, TX, screened as part of the AFI Dallas Film Festival)
