Will Ferrell plays ABA basketball team owner/coach/player/announcer/one-hit-disco-wonder Jackie Moon, another variation of the blustery, misguided idiot man-children he has made his bread and butter for the past five years. The film is a bit darker than expected, but also meandering and relatively unfunny. The running gag about a wrestling bear gets some laughs, but the movie bogs down in sports movie clichés, a strained romantic subplot that goes nowhere, and a jokey attitude about bad haircuts, bad clothes, bad sweatbands—in other words, the generally ostentatious nature of America in the 1970s. We’ve seen this before in various guises both comedic and serious, which means it has to be done really well to work. Semi-Pro is only about half that good. (Hollywood Jewel 16, Waco, TX)
