No one ever actually says, “You like to watch, don’t you?,†but that’s the essential question lurking in Gregory Hoblit’s intriguing, but frustratingly flawed thriller, which hinges on a horrific high concept that is unnervingly plausible, yet executed with a little too much Hollywood relish. Diane Liane’s resourceful cybercrimes agent is pitted against an online sicko whose identity is revealed way too early—one of several narrative flaws. Accusations of hypocrisy against the film have been a bit inflated. Yes, it condemns the sordid appeal of violence with sordid violence, but let’s not forget that the target is real-life violence, not the recreated kind. If we’re going to condemn films that use screen violence to critique its real-life counterpart, we’re going to have an exceptionally long list of very good films to throw out.
