The Orphanage (J.A. Bayona, 2007)

The Orphanage (J.A. Bayona, 2007)Despite being highly derivative of other (and better) recent European art-horror films (including the work of executive producer Guillermo Del Toro), Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Orphanage works well enough that you don’t notice until later. His widescreen compositions, subtle camera movements, and fundamental understanding of what gets under our skin ensures undivided attention, although how you take the ending will hinge on your willingness to accept New Age-y comfort as an antidote to what is essentially a real downer.
