Introduction

As a college student I believe our main objectives during this period of our lives are to:

1) achieve self-discovery and confirmation of our vocation and calling

2) growing in our knowledge of current local, national, and global issues

3) receive the education needed for our vocations and occupations

4) transition from a life of dependency to independency

It has been lightly joked throughout conversation that students attending Baylor live in a “Baylor Bubble.” Meaning that most of the students are not aware of the current state of the city that Baylor is located in, they are not aware of the current issues nation wide and world wide, and are still living with a mindset that their current status is “real life” when in reality it is far from real life. Some individuals may disagree and say that Baylor students are fully aware of what is happening throughout the community, the nation, and the world however when I over hear conversations about the choices people who they know or are acquaintances of have made in the last few days or the latest news about a certain celebrity. These topics of conversations are either detrimental to other people’s dignity, affirming the narrow perspective of individuals, not allowing the possibility for reflective thinking and reconstruction of our own beliefs, or restricting the broadening of ideas and critical thinking.

Due to this prevalent thought I hope through my Social Action Project to educate the students of Baylor about the newly enacted Global Goals. I hope tho accomplish this by planning and executing a campus wide Residence Hall Competition called The Global Goals Change Wars Challenge. The Global Goals Change Wars Challenge will be a competition that educates the student population, spreads awareness through the avenues of social media (instagram, twitter, facebook etc.), and provides Baylor with an opportunity of leading the way that a University can take action in the betterment of the world.

My hope and intended outcomes of this planned action are:

  • Baylor Students are informed about the Global Goals
  • Baylor Students are empowered and inspired to take personal action
  • The community has raised money with the intention to donate it to a non-profit organization that partners with the Global Goals

Carrying out this Social Action Project will aid in achieving one of the main objectives of being a college student: being a Global Citizen; growing in our knowledge of current national and global issues.
