Round One: September 17, 2014

Wondering what exactly this service project was, I had no expectations. First impression upon arriving to our destination: oh wow. Waco police cars to the right of the parking lot and a warehouse in front of us. As we walk through the doors, astounded to see all the various food items laid out on 8 tables pushed together. The food items varied from cereal, to soups, to fruits, and granola bars. So all 15 of us simultaneously choose a spot to stand in and as if this was routine communicated to each other which items we will be in charge of packing into the bags. And then the next minute, out packing process began. Packing bags quickly passed the time. After we finished packing the first group bags we transitioned to packing the next group of bags. This round we finished sooner than the previous. By the time we were done it was 8:15, we packed over 400 bags in a matter of 1 hour! My oh my how efficient AMSA students are in forming an assembly line and packing bags. After that we helped place cereal boxes into a large box for the next time a group of individuals will be packing bags. It’s amazing how people come together to get a job done, and sometimes with no need to utter a word. Just a gesture and eye contact to acknowledge the other person. When all the tasks were completed we enjoyed donuts, hot coffee and water. There isn’t any better way to end off impacting children’s lives than a cup of coffee and a donut. On the drive back to campus I still could not comprehend how one city needs to pack over 400 bags to provide children throughout the town with enough food for the weekend. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to impact a child’s life even though I do not have the opportunity to personally hand the child a pack of hope. The least that one who is blessed can do in the world is to bless another.
