Academy Lecture: Seeing Scripture Through New Eyes – Rev. Dr. Katherine Bassard

How did this session impact your understanding of leadership?

Her story of the donkey and Balaam made me understand that leaders are not always the ones that are appointed to be leaders. Leaders often see what other people cannot see. They see the gaps, the obstacles, the silences, the absences, and the potential in people who do not think they can do it.  God will use those who have a heart to follow God in what ever he desires to be the pioneers and dive into uncharted waters so that those who cannot speak will finally have a voice and to make a path that was not there before for those who want to pursue those new waters. Leaders know when to be observant and are available for God to use them, they have faith and courage even if they are the only ones standing for what they believe. Leaders are followed because they touch people and encourage those that there is someone who believes in what they also believe.  I learned that a leader is a leader because of where they came from and the experiences that they had. And one should not forget those things because that is something that defines who a leader is. All leaders are different and everyone has something they can offer to the table because we have all learned life lessons that will help shape our future and resolve issues.

What did I learn about the relationship

between personal values, integrity, and ethical leadership?

I learned that one has to establish what they believe and their values and stick by them. They can not waver in order to satisfy the status quo and be accepted. Most of the time leaders will be those who go against the current and do what ever they can to make the world a better place for everyone. Leaders are those who will help begin the transformation of revealing injustices to the world. We are the ones who will say things that others are afraid to say. We will be the ones who will make it possible for people to finally take a good look at and see through eyes that they did not know existed. Leaders have to have ethics and to have good ethics is to know one’s self. We have to know what we believe and why we believe it if not nothing is ever going to progress. People can sense when someone is doing what they are doing for attention or for pure and innocent intention.

How will I apply what I have learned to my leadership practice?

I will apply what I learn to observe more than react. I have a strength of developing people and relating to others, but I need to learn how to be more confident in myself and everything that I do. I have strong values and I have the intentions to make this world a better place because every day there is always something that needs to be improved. I have to always put into practice that I  have to find a balance with everything that I do, because without balance I can over work myself. And being overworked will not help in being God’s servant for His kingdom and glory.
