In 1984 George Orwell wrote that “the most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”

Looking around at contemporary culture in the United States, and at our ideas about history and education, I would venture to say that that destruction is even more complete if the people agree to it–and even perpetrate it–themselves.
