A panel of student and Waco service leaders will be speaking on the importance and impact of community service and answer any questions you may have. Students will be able to then view short videos submitted by Waco and global service organizations that describe the type of service the organization does and will also explain how students can get involved.

Virtual Discussion: Science and Democracy
Do politics belong in the laboratory? Is science inevitably political or do politics hinder good research?
On February 8th at 5:30 pm, PPD will host an online Abbey Speaker Series event that brings together scientists from academia and publishing to discuss the interplay of science and politics.
The discussion includes the following contributors:

- Luana Maroja, Associate Professor of Biology and Chair of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program at Williams College
- Holden Thorp, editor-in-chief of Science Magazine and former chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

- Chris Clemens, Jaroslav Folda Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences – Undergraduate Summer Internship

The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) is seeking applications for summer internship appointments for undergraduate students from accredited colleges and universities to conduct research at USU. The intent of this summer internship is to provide an opportunity for students interested in science, engineering, or medical career fields to participate in research directed at improving the care of injured military service members and society at large. This mentored research experience will expose participants to ongoing efforts in integrated science, technology, and engineering solutions at the nation’s premier military medical school.
What will I be doing?
The Comprehensive Student Research Training Program is a 10-week training program that provides unique exposure to basic and clinical research, social/behavioral research, health policy, and research administration to high-school and college students.
Every year, students collaborate with research mentors across all of the USU research departments. Past students have explored the participating departments of Anatomy and Physiology, Surgery, Medicine, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Microbiology, and Immunology. Those students interested in medicine have explored the participating departments of Psychiatry, Pathology, the Graduate Student Nursing Program, Preventative Medicine and Biostatistics, and the National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health.

Bethesda, Maryland
What is the anticipated start date?
The internship has a start date of Monday, June 13, 2022, and will end on Friday, August 19, 2022. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a full-time, 10-week research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USU. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:
- Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE)
- Training and Travel Allowance
Qualifications
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be currently pursuing an undergraduate degree (associate or bachelor’s)
- Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher (out of a maximum of 4.0; if other scale is used, provide qualitative interpretation and/or equivalency to 4.0 scale)
- A science or engineering program of study is preferred, and prior research experience will also be considered.
