The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) is seeking applications for summer internship appointments for undergraduate students from accredited colleges and universities to conduct research at USU. The intent of this summer internship is to provide an opportunity for students interested in science, engineering, or medical career fields to participate in research directed at improving the care of injured military service members and society at large. This mentored research experience will expose participants to ongoing efforts in integrated science, technology, and engineering solutions at the nation’s premier military medical school.
What will I be doing?
The Comprehensive Student Research Training Program is a 10-week training program that provides unique exposure to basic and clinical research, social/behavioral research, health policy, and research administration to high-school and college students.
Every year, students collaborate with research mentors across all of the USU research departments. Past students have explored the participating departments of Anatomy and Physiology, Surgery, Medicine, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Microbiology, and Immunology. Those students interested in medicine have explored the participating departments of Psychiatry, Pathology, the Graduate Student Nursing Program, Preventative Medicine and Biostatistics, and the National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health.

What is the anticipated start date?
The internship has a start date of Monday, June 13, 2022, and will end on Friday, August 19, 2022. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a full-time, 10-week research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USU. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:
- Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE)
- Training and Travel Allowance
Qualifications
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be currently pursuing an undergraduate degree (associate or bachelor’s)
- Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher (out of a maximum of 4.0; if other scale is used, provide qualitative interpretation and/or equivalency to 4.0 scale)
- A science or engineering program of study is preferred, and prior research experience will also be considered.

Fred Hutch SURP
Last year, the Honors College struck an agreement with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, which gives the Baylor Honors College direct access to send up to two students for a PAID summer internship Monday, June 13, 2022 to August 12, 2022. Applications are due January 21, 2022 by 5:00 PM CST.
The internship details can be found at this link with the exception that you will only complete an internal application with the Honors College. The Honors College will select two students to participate in the internship and then pay your stipend ($4,938 as well as up to $450 in travel expenses, provided you have a FASFA on file at Baylor). The minimum requirements are an overall GPA of 3.75, member of the Honors College, and set to graduate in either December 2022 or May 2023.
