Lab 2: Ciliate Challenge

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Objective:

The goal of this lab was to get more familiar with the ciliates and to try to identify them.

Procedures:

  1. I made a table on my notebook.
  2. I labeled the lid of the well plate (4 through 6) with a blue Sharpie.
  3. I filled each well around half way with the unknown ciliate. I used different plastic pipes for each unknown ciliate.
  4. I started observing unknown #4.
  5. After I took notes about #4, I went ahead a observed #5, took notes and then observed #6 and took notes.
  6. My partner and I switch well plates
  7. I made a second table on my notebook for unknowns 1 through 3
  8. I observed and took notes on those ciliates as well

Data/ Observations:

There were a lot of ciliates on well round #4 they were fast and to me they looked straight, like worms. I think there was a bug on well round of #4 and the ciliates were attacking the bug. #5 were like kind of curved and they were slower and bigger than #4. At the beginning it was really hard to describe #6 because they were smaller than 4 and 5 and they were clear. The food source of #6 was green and they were faster than #4. After looking more carefully into #6, I realized there were two different ciliates in #6, the second kind looked smaller than 5 but bigger than 4, they looked like triangles with tails and they were green.

I didn’t have the opportunity to look very carefully at unknown 1,2,3 because we ran out of time.
