Greetings fellow Baylor Bears,
Congratulations to Coach Ryan McGuyre and the No. 24-ranked Baylor Volleyball team for their impressive 3-0 road win over Texas Tech on Wednesday. The Bears are 17-5 overall this season and 7-2 in the Big 12 ranking. The team hits the road again for a showdown against Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT in Norman, Oklahoma.
Prior to the Baylor football game on Saturday, the “B” Association will host a brief ceremony in the Letterwinners Lounge to formally announce to its members the establishment of the Dutch Schroeder Letterwinners Legacy Endowment. The purpose of the endowment fund is to secure a healthy future for the “B” Association and to serve as a living memorial. As letterwinners, we have a great opportunity and responsibility to continue and improve upon the Association’s legacy of supporting Baylor Athletics and Baylor athletes. This endowment will ensure that no matter what tomorrow brings, the “B” Association will be well-equipped to continue its mission in perpetuity.
The endowment was named in Schroeder’s honor because he poured so much of his life into the “B” Association and into the lives of its members. I am confident that if it had not been for his dedication and commitment to this organization for more than four decades, there would not be a “B” Association today.
Schroeder’s connection to Baylor dates back nearly six decades as he enrolled at Baylor in 1948 and began his career as a player during the 1948-49 season. He was named the team’s head coach in the fall of 1961 and continued to coach through the 1973 season. Through his 12-season tenure as head coach, he amassed a 196-165-1 record with the Bears, including a Southwest Conference championship in 1966. Schroeder still stands as the program’s third winningest coach, and he had one of the best winning percentages in the nation for the first five years of his tenure. After he passed the Baylor program on to Mickey Sullivan in 1973, he remained on Baylor’s faculty for another 27 years.
Dutch Schroeder is more than just an ol’ baseball coach. His daily personal life is an inspiration to all of us. He is a dad, husband (now widower), educator, humanitarian, Sunday school teacher, mentor, and friend. He also possesses a true servant’s heart, regularly visiting people who are sick and hospitalized. He takes time to comfort family members at funerals, pick up medicine for those confined to their homes, and visit the elderly in nursing homes. It takes a special kind of person to do all those things and Schroeder does them with ease.
