Legends of the Spring

The “B” Association was pleased to extend our Baylor Legends recognitions to some of our spring sports this year, presenting awards to letterwinners in Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Baseball and Softball.  You can read more about these honorees below:  

 

Cory Jefferson- Men’s Basketball 2010-14

Former two-time All-Big 12 standout, Cory Jefferson, was recognized as a 2022 Baylor Basketball Legend on February 12th at the BU vs. UT game.

Jefferson was a four-year letterwinner for the Bears from 2010 to 2014. He led the Bears to the 2013 NIT title and finished his career with a 13-3 postseason record.  

He became the first Baylor Men’s Basketball player to make three NCAA tournament appearances, advancing to the Sweet 16 all three times and twice to the Elite Eight.  

Jefferson is ranked fourth in career blocked shots, fourth in career double-doubles, and sixth all-time in block shots per game.  He became the 26th 1,000-point scorer in Baylor history, finishing 19th with 1,159 total points, and he is the only Big 12 Conference player named to Team USA at the 2013 World University Games.  

 

Sophia Young-Malcolm- Women’s Basketball 2003-06

Also recognize on February 12th, at the BU vs. West Virginia game, was former two-time All-American Sophia Young-Malcolm! 

Young’s four-year playing career at Baylor spanned from 2002-06. She was a member of Baylor’s first NCAA National Championship team in 2005, and she is one of seven players in BU history to amass both 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career.  She still ranks fourth all-time in scoring, fifth in field goal percentage, second in rebounds, and second in double-doubles.

At the time of her selection in the WNBA Draft, Young was Baylor’s highest-ever draft pick in the WNBA when she was the fourth overall selection to the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2006. She played 301 career games over nine seasons in the WNBA, including three WNBA All-Star selections. She tallied 4,300 career points and 1,807 rebounds in a career that spanned from 2006-15, earning a selection to the San Antonio Stars’ All-Decade Team.  Young currently serves on Coach Nicki Collen’s staff as Assistant AD for Player Development. 

 

Paula Young- Softball 1977-80

The “B” Association proudly recognized former player and head coach, Paula Young, as a 2022 Baylor Softball Legend on March 19th. 

Young was a two-sport standout for Baylor, competing in softball and basketball, from 1976 through 1980. A four-year softball letterwinner, Young captained the 1980 Baylor team as a shortstop. She was named the 1979-80 Texas AIAW Player of the Year, and she helped BU’s 1980 team to a seventh-place in the 1980 AIAW national tournament. On the basketball court, Young was a member of Baylor’s 1977-78 squad that finished fifth at the AIAW national women’s basketball tournament.

 After completing her eligibility, Young served as the head coach of the Baylor softball team, first from 1982-88, and then again from 1996-2000. She ranks as the second-winningest softball coach in program history with 322 victories. In between her softball head coaching stints, she established the first women’s golf program at Baylor and served as its head coach from 1988 through 1995.

 In 2011, Young was inducted into the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame. Since retiring from coaching, Young has continued her work in Baylor Athletics and currently serves as the Assistant AD for Event Management and Facilities.

 

Logan Brown- Baseball 2012-15

Logan Brown was recognized as a Baylor Legend at the BU vs. TCU game on March 19th. 

Brown was a 4-year letterwinner for the Bears from 2012-2015, and a key member of the 2012 Big 12 Conference Championship team. In 2014, Brown was selected as the program’s first-ever member of the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. 1 Gold Glove team.  The following year, he went on to lead the Bears in multiple team categories, including Runs, Hits, Doubles, and Stolen Bases. His performances in 2015 earned him All Big 12 Conference Honors.

A recipient of the Larry Isbell Most Valuable Player Award, presented to a player on the team with most point totals in key statistical categories, Brown also excelled in the classroom earning Academic All-Big 12 honors for three consecutive years and  COSIDA Academic All-American recognition in 2015.
