Baylor vs. BYU – Memories of 1983

What a great day to be a Baylor Bear! This weekend will be an exciting one at McLane Stadium as the Bears take on future Big XII Conference opponent BYU.

This matchup brings back memories of the last time Baylor faced the Cougars at home in 1983. In one of the most thrilling games of the year, the Bears overcame a three-point deficit late in the game to win 40-36. Although the Cougars’ quarterback, future NFL Hall of Famer Steve Young, finished the game with 464 yards total offense (351 passing, 113 rushing), the Bears, led by current “B” Association President Cody Carlson, were just too good that day.

It was a devastating loss for BYU. Had the Cougars walked away with a victory, BYU would have finished the season as one of only two undefeated teams in the country, greatly increasing their chances of facing the other undefeated team, Nebraska, in the national championship Orange Bowl game.

The Bears went on to a 7-4-1 season record, while BYU finished their season as WAC Champions with an 11-1 season record and a final ranking of #8 in the country. That was then. This is now! Both teams will enter the game at 5-1 with bowl eligibility on the line. If this game doesn’t get you fired up, I don’t know what will!
The entire nation will be watching this one, so come join us at McLane Stadium on Saturday for this exciting Homecoming Game match-up and let’s cheer the Bears on to another win over the Cougars from Utah!  Sic ‘em!
