Former Defensive End Ira Lewis to Receive Bobby Jones Award

The Baylor “B” Association is proud to recognize the recipient of the 2019 Bobby Jones Memorial Award presented annually to an outstanding senior player for Leadership, Sportsmanship, and Team Play during practice for and performance in the Bears’ Homecoming football game. This award was established to honor the memory of the late former Baylor quarterback, Bobby Jones, who led the No. 11th-ranked Bears to a 9-2 season record and a 13-7 victory over No. 2-ranked Tennessee in the 1957 Sugar Bowl.

At the Homecoming game this Saturday against Texas Tech, we will salute former All-Big 12 Defensive End, Ira Lewis, for his performance and leadership in last year’s thrilling 35-31 come-from-behind victory over Oklahoma State. Down by 10 points with less than 9 minutes remaining in the game, Lewis led a defensive stand that shutdown OSU’s final drive, allowing Baylor’s offense the opportunity to score the game-winning points.

Lewis completed his undergrad degree in political science in May 2018, and he is currently playing in the National Football League with the Houston Texans. His leadership and commitment to excellence on and off the field has been an inspiration to his teammates, coaches, and all who know him.

The Bobby Jones Memorial Award will be presented by the son of the late Bobby Jones, Mark Jones.  Please join the Jones family this Saturday in congratulating 2019 Bobby Jones Memorial Award Recipient, Ira Lewis!

  1. I am a prior recipient of the Bobby Jones Award and I believe that the award was created to honor Bobby Jones for his contribution to our athletic program. So on a future date marking a significant date that this award has been in
place, the prior award winners might be invited on the field to honor the person and the family for whom this award was created. I am not attempting to undermine the present award winner, but just attempting to make the
Bobby Jones family feel honored by the previous award winners. Just my thoughts. Yours truly.

  2. Congrats Ira! What an honor. I remember that game and how special you played. What a wonderful award for a deserving young man. I was honored to have received this award back in 1989. Welcome to the club, Ira.
