Max Muncy (Baseball 2010-12) became the first former Baylor player to participate in the MLB Home Run Derby on July 16. Muncy made it to the semi-finals before getting knocked out by Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals who went on to the win the Derby. Muncy made his first appearance in the Majors this season when he was called up by the Dodgers on April 17 and quickly broke a franchise record, becoming the fastest player to reach 20 home runs in his 183rd at-bat.

Deon Minor (Track 1992-95), Michael Johnson (Football 1994-97), and Tony Miller (Track 1990-93) each had children attend a USA Track & Field Regional meet, competing to earn spots in the Junior Olympics in Greensboro, North Carolina. Minor, Johnson, and Miller competed together on Baylor’s track team in the early 1990s and have remained close friends. Johnson’s son Joshua won the shot put in the 11-12 age division, Miller’s son Cameron won the 200 meters in the 17-18 age division, and Minor’s daughter won the 400 meters and set the new regional record in the 11-12 age division, each qualifying for the Junior Olympics.

 


Kiana Horton (Track 2016-18) won a gold medal as part of the women’s 4x400m relay team at the Athletic World Cup in London. Along with teammates Brionna Thomas, Jasmine Blocker, and Courtney Okolo, the U.S. women’s team finished with a time of 3:24.38. Horton is a Junior All-American and holds the new outdoor school record holder in the 400 meters after running 51.22 at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship last season.

Nate Orf (Baseball 2012-13) hit a solo home run for his first Major League hit with the Milwaukee Brewers that led to a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Orf was playing in his third career big-league game after signing as a undrafted free agent six years ago.
