Letterwinner Shout Outs

Mark Adickes (Football 1979-83) received Baylor’s Medal of Service for Contributions to Medicine. The University’s Meritorious Achievement Awards program acknowledges the distinctive mission of Baylor University and recognizes those who achieve success in a manner consistent with that mission. More than 30 years after his last snap as a standout offensive lineman for the Bears, Adickes was awarded Baylor’s Medal of Service for Contributions to Medicine.

Hailey Cowan (Acrobatics & Tumbling 2011-14) won the inaugural flyweight title on December 1st at American Kombat Alliance: Rite of Passage 2 in Bossier City, Louisiana. As a three-time cheerleading world qualifier and member of the inaugural Baylor Acrobatics & Tumbling team, Cowan went on to win the NCATA national championship in trio 2013 and be named a two-time NCATA All-American. Cowan began training in mixed martial arts after graduating from Baylor in 2014 and made her amateur debut in August of this year.

Brian Newberry (Football 1996) entered his third season with Kennesaw State in 2017 as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach. The Owls fell to Sam Houston State on Saturday, December 9, in the quarterfinals of the FCS Championship. Newberry, who boasts more than decade of coaching experience, guided a defense last season that led the Big South Conference in points allowed (21.7) and rushing (130.3), while ranking second in total defense (3218) – each of those ranked in the Top 20 nationally.

Gary Baxter (Football 1997-2000) will begin a new partnership with Texas Spine & Joint Hospital and Earl Campbell to start an institute in sports medicine, research, and treatment in Tyler, TX. Pro Football Hall of Fame and Heisman Trophy-winning running back Campbell and defensive back Baxter, a standout on several all-time great Baltimore Ravens defenses, will play pivotal roles in fundraising for Project Rose’s nonprofit foundation. The institute will seek philanthropic funding to help current and retired athletes, as well as aspiring young athletes, get the benefit of sports injury and prevention, rehabilitation and performance training.

Joel Allison (Football 1969), Board of Regent Chair, and Dr. Linda Livingstone, University President, will host a national conversation series in various cities across the country this spring. They will provide insight into Baylor’s progress through a Q&A format as we look toward the future. The first two sessions took place in Waco in November.
