Baylor Soccer’s Record-Setting Season

 

Baylor soccer finished 11th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, tying the 2012 squad for the best finish in the rankings in program history. Baylor has finished the season in the top 25 three times in the program’s 21-year history, finishing at 18th in 1998 and now 11th in both 2012 and 2017.

This year’s squad made the deepest postseason run by a BU team, advancing to the Elite 8 for the first time in program history. BU finished the 2017 campaign with a 15-6-3 record, falling 4-0 to No. 3 Duke in Durham in the fourth round of NCAA tournament play.

Senior midfielder Aline De Lima was named to the 2017 United Soccer Coaches All-America second team. De Lima finished the 2017 season with seven goals and eight assists, totaling 22 points. After finishing the regular season with four goals and three assists, De Lima posted two goals and four assists in the Big 12 Soccer Championship, lifting the Bears to wins over No. 14 Texas, No. 16 Oklahoma State, and TCU. BU won its third conference title and De Lima was named the tournament’s Offensive Most Outstanding Performance.

Head coach Paul Jobson will enter his fifth season as head coach in 2018, his 11th year, overall, with the program. Jobson was named Hero Sports Women’s Soccer Fan Choice Coach of the Year.

Baylor Volleyball’s Back-to-Back Postseason Run

 

Baylor volleyball ended the 2017 season in the NCAA Tournament for the program’s first back-to-back postseason berths while also hosting the first and second rounds for the first time. BU took down Miami of Ohio in the opening round before falling to Colorado in the second round.

The Bears had four players voted to the 2017 American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I Southwest Region First Team while Yossiana Pressley was named Southwest Region Freshman of the Year. Joining Pressley on the first team is two-time honoree Katie Staiger, Shelly Fanning and Hannah Lockin. This is the first season since 2009 that multiple Bears were named to the All-Region Team.

Staiger capped off an impressive career at Baylor last Saturday, finishing with 1,700 career kills which is second-best in program history. The 2016 Second Team All-American also finished with the second-most attacks at Baylor, logging 4,423 swings in 123 matches played.

In his third season with the Bears, Head Coach Ryan McGuyre was voted the Big 12 Coach of the Year as he led Baylor to its highest conference finish in program history with a 13-3 record. Under his guidance, Baylor has collected three-straight winning seasons which include two consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time since 1992-93. This is the program’s first Coach of the Year award.
