Ben Perry Appointed to Commission on Jail Standards

 

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Ben Perry (Football 1982-84) to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards for a term set to expire January 31, 2023. The commission establishes standards for the care and treatment of county prisoners, and the construction, maintenance and operation of county jails.

Perry is McLennan County Commissioner for the 4th Precinct and is an insurance executive at Higginbotham Insurance Company. Additionally, he has 14 years of past service in public safety as a police detective for the City of Waco and a police officer and firefighter for the City of Woodway. He is a board member of the Heart of Texas Fair & Rodeo and the McLennan County Appraisal District and a former board member for the Midway Little League and Family Abuse Shelter.

A long-time resident of Woodway, Texas, Perry came to Baylor in 1981 on a football scholarship where he played for Baylor Coach Grant Teaff.

Lunch with a Legend with Tommy Bowman

 

On Thursday, May 4, the Baylor Sports Network presented the Lunch with a Legend honoring basketball letterwinner, Tommy Bowman (1968-70), at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

Bowman entered Baylor as a freshman in 1966 becoming the school’s first African-American scholarship athlete. Despite the societal challenges that existed during that time, he went on to excel as a student-athlete, becoming a two-time All-Southwest Conference player for the Bears during his varsity career. In 1992, Bowman was inducted into the Baylor Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2006, the “B” Association honored him as a Men’s Basketball Legend.

Joel Allison Receives The American Hospital Association’s 2017 Award of Honor

 

On May 8, Joel Allison (Football 1969), former president/CEO of Baylor Scott & White Health, was recognized with the American Hospital Association’s Award of Honor. The award is given in conjunction with the AHA’s annual membership meeting in Washington, D.C.

AHA’s Award of Honor is given to organizations and individuals to recognize exemplary contributions to the health and well-being of people through leadership on major health policies or social initiatives.

Allison joined Baylor’s health system in 1993 as senior executive vice president and chief operating officer and became president and CEO in 2000. He retired in February 2017. He currently serves as a senior advisor to the chairman of the Baylor Scott & White Holdings board of trustees.
