Week 5 Blog Post: Social Judgment Theory

Through out the United States history there has been 43 presidents. Each and every president has very different on the fundamental topics for our country. Each president presents their view differently. Our pervious president, Barak Obama, was very effective at communicating. Our current president, Donald Trump, is also effective at communicating his opinions. Although they are both good at communicating, they have very opposite opinions on most topics and portray their message is very different ways. When comparing other past presidents to our current president, even if they have similar views, the way that people view them has a whole effects the way that their message is perceived by the public.

Social Judgement is an objective socio physio theory that was theorized by Muzafer Sherif. It claims that on almost every topic, each person has an anchor point, a latitude of acceptance, a latitude of noncommitment, and a latitude of rejection that they believe about the topic. Depending on how differentiated the person’s opinions are on a single topic, it can be more or less difficult to changed the already formed opinion. “According to social judgment theory, once we’ve judged a new message to be within our latitude of acceptance, we will adjust our attitude somewhat to accommodate the new input” (181). If the message agrees with our view points, it is easy to get further wrapped up into your opinion. On the other hand, if the message you listen to says something that opposes your opinion, you are much less likely to drastically change your opinion. In some case, you may feel more drawn to the side that the message is opposing. A big part of the acceptance of a message is the source that it is coming from. “The lack of an interpersonal bond between [people] limits the amount of influence that’s possible” (183).

The Social judgement theory incorporates a lot of the communication that happens within the political sphere. For example, if you are a trump supporter, you are much more likely to accept a message that he is portraying. This is because it is more than likely within your latitude of acceptance. It is way easier to convince a group of people that already has a similar view point as you. As the United States progresses, the political sphere as become more and more polarized. This polarization has caused the two major political spheres, the democrats and the republicans. When you are registering to vote it is almost forced that you align yourself with a party. Within these parties it is easier to find similarities in opinions rather than differences. Although the opinions on every single topic is not unified within the groups, the members much rather agree with each other rather than the opposing sides opinion. When Donald trump is speaking about his opinions, most democrats few everything he says as ridiculous and it pushes them further to the opposite side of the scale. The same thing happens when republican hear a message from a democrat. People are more likely going to stick with people they feel agree with their views.
