Class Poster Critique 3/6/19

Rationale

The rationale behind these procedures is to ensure that poster creations for Scholar’s day follow the correct format and that basic poster requirements are understood. The procedures were also done to give practice for poster making and create a draft for the class to work on for Scholar’s Day.

Tools/Procedure

  1. Previously created large groups were each tasked with presenting their posters
  2. Each poster was critiqued and analyzed by the class
  3. The class voted on which poster to edit as the class final copy

Results

The above poster layout was the class winner. This poster will be edited by the class and will eventually be turned in for scholars day.

Conclusion

Lab period today was not used for any scientific research, but I can say that I demonstrated my understanding of poster making and the class is ready to move forward.

Future Plans

In the future, we will be working as a class to create a poster for Scholar’s day.

Rationale:

To make a final draft of the poster board, which will later be combined with other poster boards in the group for a final poster for scholars day

Procedure:

  1. all draft posters made by the big groups were presented by each group and then critiqued
  2. in the end, a vote was taken on which group’s poster board will be used
  3. by vote, poster made by Aman Patel, Sabin Patel, Micheal Lum, Lucy Potts, Emily Gaw, and Lily Goodman was chosen for final poster.

Results:

the chosen poster board for presentation after editing

other poster boards that were presented

conclusions

After critiques and voting, this board was chosen. the board will require some more editing and merging with information used by other groups

Future steps

edit poster board for scholars day

Poster Presentation

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Title: Poster Presentation

Date: 6 March 2019

Purpose: To present the compiled posters and decide as a class which aspects of each poster belong on the final Scholar’s week poster

Tools:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint

Procedure:

  • Each group presented their poster to the class and each group critiqued each other’s posters in order to select a final poster format and elements from each poster to compile the final Scholar’s week poster.

Results/Observations: The final poster format came from Lily Goodman’s group, and various elements from other posters were taken. NO final poster exists at this time to post on the report.

Conclusions/Next Steps: The final poster still needs to be made, but the rough outline and design being determined is a big step towards the final product.

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Title: Poster Design

Date: 4 March 2019

Purpose: To design a final poster to present to the class before agreeing on a final format

Tools:

  • Microsoft Powerpoint

Procedure:

  • In collaboration with another poster group, elements from both posters were combined to make a final poster that was submitted for presentation and review by the rest of the class.

Results/Observations: Below is a screenshot of the group’s poster:

Next Steps/Conclusions: The poster will be presented to the class and the class will decide as a whole how the final poster representing the cohort will be formatted.

Final Poster design

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Rationale:

To make a final draft of the poster board, which will later be combined with other poster boards in the group for a final poster for scholars day

Procedure:

  1. The mistakes made in annotation of the genome of Napoleon B were discussed and a list was given for what corrections needed to be made
  2. the assigned groups collaborated with the other group they were assigned to work with to discuss the first drafts.
  3. the two groups then combined each others first draft of the poster and made a final draft of the poster for the groups.
  4. The groups combined the content used, and the figures and tables.
  5. the final draft was then submitted for consideration.

Results

the final draft created by the two groups

Conclusions

we have reached the end looking primarily at napoleon B and are now approaching individual research projects, where we will be able to look into interesting data for Napoleon B.

Future Steps

Now, we will be practicing presentation of the posterboard for scholars day.

Beginning Poster Production

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Rationale: Discuss the minutiae and specifics of producing a scientific poster, to be produced at Ursa Scholars day.

Procedure:

  • Reviewed posters from previous years
  • Found what we did, did not like aesthetically, as well as the included subjects
  • Broke into groups
  • Discussed how to present our information effectively, especially compared to the other posters
  • Outlined the basics of how we would like to lay out our poster
  • Decided to bullet point most information, for speed and organizational purposes

  • Drew out the outline on a piece of paper
  • Turned in the draft as our QTM

Future Plans:
Use the draft to construct our poster as a group, and refine until it is presentable.

Poster Work

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Purpose: work on the rough draft of our poster for URSA Scholars day.

Procedure:

  • Reviewed previous poster designs
  • Created 48″ by 48″ PowerPoint slide
  • Added text boxes to outline the different parts of the poster
  • Filled in titles and other basic information to build a rough skeleton
  • Completed several boxes of information
  • Found graphics and added phamerartor figures
  • Struggled to get online powerpoint service to update correctly
  • Played around with colors and little details until the end of lab

Results: Now we have a nearly complete poster, missing a good color scheme and revised details for each category.

Future Plans: Continue revising the poster until we present for the class.

Poster Board Design

02/25/19

Rationale: to prepare a scientific poster board for Scholars Day

Procedure:

  1. the proper elements and components required in a scientific poster board were discussed
  2. examples of poster boards were compared
  3. groups for independent research and drafts of poster board were assigned
  4. assigned to be in a group with Sabin Patel and Michael Lum
  5. draft for a poster board was made with the members

Results:

first sketch of draft

Conclusion:

making poster boards requires a great amount of preparation. They must be specifically designed so that they can be easily used to present the information.

future steps

we will make a draft poster as a group, which will later be combined with other poster boards for a final draft.

Small Group Poster Creation 2/27/18

Rationale

The rationale behind these procedures is to ensure that poster creations for Scholar’s day follow the correct format and that basic poster requirements are understood. The procedures were also done to give practice for poster making and create a draft for Scholar’s Day.

Tools/Procedure

  1. Previously created groups worked together to create poster drafts based on previous instruction
    • Poster layout and design was created based on previously created poster sketch
    • Class data from last semester were examined and graphics were created based on these data
    • Methods were described in graphic format
    • Data from both semesters were compiled and results were reported
  2. The poster draft was submitted

Results

The above poster layout was designed by Rachel and I, it is just a draft, but it demonstrates an understanding of scientific poster making.

Conclusion

Lab period today was not used for any scientific research, but I can say that I demonstrated my understanding of poster making.

Future Plans

In the future, I will continue working with Rachel and then with larger groups to create a poster for Scholar’s day.
