3/4 ~ Final Poster Designs

Rationale: In groups, finalize the poster layout with information

Materials:

  • PowerPoint
  • Laptop

Procedure:

  • Got into large groups and brainstormed/formatted posters into a final poster to be presented
  • Added in the rationale, methods, results, discussion, and acknowledgement sections of the poster

Observations:

  • The group created poster

Conclusion/Next Steps: The poster is “finished” and will be presented in front of the class next lab so a final poster design can be determined and created

Poster Design 3/4/2019

Title: Poster Design

Date: 4 March 2019

Purpose: To design a final poster to present to the class before agreeing on a final format

Tools:

  • Microsoft Powerpoint

Procedure:

  • In collaboration with another poster group, elements from both posters were combined to make a final poster that was submitted for presentation and review by the rest of the class.

Results/Observations: Below is a screenshot of the group’s poster:

Next Steps/Conclusions: The poster will be presented to the class and the class will decide as a whole how the final poster representing the cohort will be formatted.

Poster presentations 3/6

Rationale: Present group posters for class opinion

Procedure: The 4 group posters were presented to the class. The class initiated the good and the bad of the posters. The posters were voted on to determine the best poster to represent the class at URSA.

Results: Group 4’s poster and this layout will be used to represent. the class overall poster

Conclusion: Groups said the poster was a great balance of words and images.

Future work: This poster will be fixed until it shows a great presentation of the findings discovered in the class at URSA.

DNA Day 14

6 March 2019 ✷ Poster Making Cont.

Rationale:  A poster for URSA Scholar’s day was decided upon by comparing and combining the 4 made by the class

Procedure

  • The 4 posters were each presented by group members and the best parts were noted and other parts were critiqued/questioned
  • The things I liked best about my group’s poster were questioned heavily by the class
  • The 4 posters were voted on to determine which would be the best to work off of and ultimately, this poster won.
  • The class had mixed feelings over the donut-pie chart, so it was edited to make it easier to comprehend.

Results

image of our poster

incompletely updated donut-pie chart; letters will be added to the pie portion in order to correspond to the gene function indicated in the key

Conclusion

The group was told it had a poster that was a great balance of pictures and words and that the graphics were creative.

Future plans

This poster will be updated until it reflects what is to be presented at Scholar’s Day.

DNA Day 13

4 March 2019 ✷ Poster Making Cont.

Rationale:  A poster for URSA Scholar’s day was created by combining the posters of 2 smaller groups.

Procedure

  • The small groups were paired up and the best parts of each poster were implemented.
  • The other group shared a link to their poster with my group
  • My materials and methods image and my donut-pie chart was included in the final poster
  • The format of the other group’s poster was used
  • everything was cleaned up on the poster using google slides
  • the poster was downloaded and submitted

Results

Conclusion

The poster created in today’s lab was simple and easy to look at. It has a good balance of pictures and words and it will need slight changes, but overall, it is a strong candidate.

Future plans

This poster will be compared to the posters of those of other groups.

Lab Day 13-14: Final Posters

Rationale

Discuss as a class which poster can best tell the experiment for Scholars Week

Procedure

  1. made poster within small groups
  2. combined poster ideas with large group
  3. discussed the final 4 poster ideas with the class

Conclusion

We decided to take Group 4’s poster layout and suggested changes or addition from other groups to that poster.

March 6 2019 Poster Presentations and Critiques

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to present the four posters that were created in order to compare them and design a collective class poster.

Tools/Procedures:

Tools:

  • Posters
  • Critiques QTM

Procedures:

  1. The four posters were presented to the class, discussing why different choices were made for each poster.
  2. Each poster was critiqued, both positively and negatively, on its design, information, and details.
  3. As a class, it was decided that the class poster would be based off poster 4 and would include details from other posters as well as new figures and information.

Results:
The class poster layout was chosen and discussions were started to create the final product. Below is a picture of the poster chosen for layout.

Conclusions:
In conclusion, the layout for the poster was chosen. Ideas were shared for how the final poster should look and what it should include. Also, new ideas were shared for figures that could add more details to the poster that highlight NapoleonB more specifically.

Future Work:
Future work will include editing and designing the class poster, as well as designing new figures for NapoleonB.

Presenting Poster Designs 3/6/19

Rationale: We are practicing presenting the posters to pick the best design, as well as, to get a feel for presenting.

Tools: N/A

Procedure:

  1. Presented posters and gave feedback on design choices.
  2. Voted on the best one and made a plan for imporvements.

Results:

N/A

Conclusion and Future Work: We decided Lily Goodman’s group poster was the best overall design and plan to improve on it. I will begin to work on using the phagesDB api to make a chart correlating phams of the genes in NapoleonB to phage cluster.

Final Poster design

Rationale:

To make a final draft of the poster board, which will later be combined with other poster boards in the group for a final poster for scholars day

Procedure:

  1. The mistakes made in annotation of the genome of Napoleon B were discussed and a list was given for what corrections needed to be made
  2. the assigned groups collaborated with the other group they were assigned to work with to discuss the first drafts.
  3. the two groups then combined each others first draft of the poster and made a final draft of the poster for the groups.
  4. The groups combined the content used, and the figures and tables.
  5. the final draft was then submitted for consideration.

Results

the final draft created by the two groups

Conclusions

we have reached the end looking primarily at napoleon B and are now approaching individual research projects, where we will be able to look into interesting data for Napoleon B.

Future Steps

Now, we will be practicing presentation of the posterboard for scholars day.

NapoleonB’s Genes 25 and 28 Corrections and Final Poster (3/4/19)

Rationale:

Errors found in NapoleonB’s genome were corrected. The poster was completed.

Procedure:

  1. NapoleonB’s gene 25’s coding potential was checked using the GeneMark graph.
  2. NapoleonB’s gene 28’s start choice source was checked using DNA Master.
  3. Both genes were corrected on NapoleonB’s PhageNotes
  4. Completed poster through collaboration of ideas and with the addition information.

Results:

The following images show the updated NapoleonB genes 25 and 28.

The following image shows the final poster.

Conclusion:

NapoleonB’s gene 25’s coding potential error was fixed. NapoleonB’s gene 28’s start choice source error was corrected. However, the corrections for NapoleonB’s gene 25-28 are not complete since Starterator still needs to be checked.

The poster still needs a few images to be updated such as the TEM image of NapoleonB and NapoleonB’s leaf.

Future Work:

The Starterator will be checked for NapoleonB’s genes 25-28. A poster will also be selected to present for scholar’s week.
