27 February 2019 ✷ Poster Making

Rationale:  The poster for URSA Scholar’s day was created by each group

Procedure

  • The drawing from the previous period was referenced, but the dimensions and orientation ended up being changed to a large square.
  • A shared powerpoint was created and group members edited each section.
  • I was responsible for materials and methods and the pie chart in “data”
  • I downloaded the entire Phamerator map and converted it to a .jpeg file in order to insert it
  • The poster was saved and submitted

Conclusion

The poster created in today’s lab was simple and easy to look at. It has some spacing issues but more time to adjust it would benefit the group.

Future plans

The best parts of each poster will be combined into one amazing poster that will be printed and presented at Scholar’s Day.

DNA Day 11

25 February 2019 ✷ NapoleonB Poster Planning

Rationale: The poster plan for NapoleonB at URSA Scholars day was proposed by sketching it out on paper

Procedure

  • Past posters were looked at and critiqued/analyzed
    • flaws were noted and kept in mind when planning for our own poster
  • Students broke into groups to plan posters
  • The ideal poster was drawn and what was going in each section was indicated; some research into software and what PowerPoint had to offer was looked into.

Results

Drawing of our poster

Conclusion

The poster should be simple but pleasant to look at with enough information on it for viewers to understand the project.

Future plans

The powerpoint version of our poster will be crafted in the following lab period.

First draft of Poster Board

02/27/19

rationale: to make a scientific poster board for presentation at scholars day

procedure:

  1. google slide was used to start the first draft of the poster board for napoleon b.
  2. dimensions were set as 48 in by 36 in, with the font size as 28
  3. all data collected from wet lab and in silico lab was used
  4. the introduction, methods and materials, references and acknowledgements were completed
  5. multiple visuals from both labs were used for visual representation of the lab.

Results

the first draft of the poster board in development

Conclusion

the more skills you have with the computer, the better your performance. this process was quite slow and the visuals made are produced at our max potential, which is not much, but the visuals are easy to present and understand for the audience. the time at our disposal was also in inadequate for creating a proper, completed first draft.

Future steps

complete the first draft and create a better final draft through augmentation.

2.27.19 Poster Rough Draft

Rationale:

To create a group rough draft of the poster displaying all the information we have learned this year.

Procedure:

  1. Created a shared power point and proceeded to create a poster template.
  2. We then filled in the poster with information, graphics, and other items as seen fit.
  3. We had a pretty rough draft of the poster by the end of lab.

Conclusions:

We made a rough draft poster.

Next Steps:

The next step will be to continue working on the poster and eventually create a class poster, combining the best elements from each group in order for it to be presented at URSA week.

February 28

2.25.19 Poster Ideas

Rationale:

To come up with ideas about what we will include and how we will construct our poster for URSA Week.

Procedure:

  1. We viewed various posters from the previous SEA-PHAGE classes to come with ideas as a group regarding what we will do for our poster for NapoleonB.
  2. We determined that a concise presentation of information is very important, as is the use of appropriate color, symmetry, and appropriate font size.
  3. We proceeded to be assigned groups and sketch a rough design of how we wanted to lay out our poster.

Conclusions:

We need to have a large enough font to be able to be read easily and include graphics/appropriate colors.

Next Steps:

The next step will be to continue designing and creating our poster as a group with the goal being to create one as a class for URSA week.

2/27 ~ Poster Creation

Rationale: After creating the rough layout last lab, will be creating the “first draft” of the poster with group members.

Materials:

  • Computer
  • Paint
  • PowerPoint
  • Office

Procedure:

  • Got together in groups and discussed how to effectively create the poster
  • Deliberated about which aspects/results should be displayed on the Results part of the poster
  • Opened PowerPoint and created the individual sections of the poster, along with the specific headings
  • Worked on the center circle graph representing the genes of NapoleonB
  • Submitted the “first draft” poster as the QTM

Observations:

The “first draft” of the poster created by the group

Conclusion/Next Steps: The posters will be reviewed by the TA’s and Dr. Adair. After consideration, the lab will continue to work on and critique and posters until one, singular academic poster is created.

February 28

2/25 ~ Poster Brainstorming

Rationale: Brainstorm ideas for the poster design with assigned group

Materials:

  • Laptop
  • Paper
  • Writing Utensil

Procedure:

  • Viewed examples of past posters with the lab
  • Met group members and brainstormed ideas for the poster
  • Drew a rough sketch of how the poster would look like

Observations;

The rough draft sketch of the poster design

Conclusion/Next Steps: Learned more about poster aspects and necessary parts of the poster. Next lab, will be completely creating the poster design(s) and information that goes in each respective section.

Digitally Designed Poster (2/27/19)

Rationale:

Started designing using Microsoft PowerPoint a poster.

Procedure:

  1. Used Microsoft 365 PowerPoint to re-create the rough sketch previously brainstormed.

Results:

The following image shows what was completed.

Conclusion:

The poster still not finished. Figures and additional information still being completed.

Future Work:

Finish poster.

February 28

Poster Brainstroming (2/25/19)

Rationale:

Looked at previous posters and started brainstorming.

Procedure:

  1. Viewed previous posters.
  2. Drew a rough sketch of an idea for the placement for the sections.

Results:

The following is an image of the rough sketch of my group’s ideas.

Conclusion:

Posters should include an introduction, methods, results, conclusions, reference, and acknowledgements sections. The introduction section should have the background information, objectives and the general research question stated. The way BEARS in the SEA 2017-2018 cohort used bullet points made it easy to read. Also, the figures they used made their posters stand out. The main goal in making the poster is to present the correct findings in a clear and concise way.

Future Work:

Start designing poster using Microsoft PowerPoint.

February 27

Poster creation 2/27/19

Rationale: Design and create a poster for Scholars Week

Procedures: Google slide was created so that all group members could have access to the poster as the poster design was set. Lab data from NapoleonB soil metadata were obtained, along with other images of the wet lab results of NapoleonB. Google slides opened and the widths were set at 48in x 36in. Once the poster was done, the poster was saved via. microsoft powerpoint.

Results: Rough draft of the final poster was created.

Conclusions: The poster was a rough draft that was completed, but the poster was not. Few points are needed in discussions, and the overall design needs to be adjusted to ensure that all boxes are aligned correctly.

Future Work: Poster needs to be finalized and the poster needs to be adjusted. The final poster will be compared with other posters and the class will choose a poster that will best represent the class at Scholars week.
