Carol Perry, senior lecturer in journalism, public relations and new media, has created a small beacon of light for students burdened by the busyness of midterms and preparation for Baylor’s Homecoming week. Students in Perry’s Media Design classes have created a “calligraphy tree” just outside of Castellaw Communications Center for passers-by to enjoy.
“It was actually a student’s idea,” Perry said. “We were talking about letter forms and fonts in class, and calligraphy trees are common in the Pacific Northwest.”
The tree is decorated with strands of string that are adorned with slips of paper all shapes and sizes. Students have written words of encouragement, favorite quotes and Bible verses using calligraphy techniques practiced in class.
“When we first started this project, our class thought it would be really awesome if we could share our words of encouragement in a creative way,” said Eric Vining, a student in Perry’s class. “It’s really great to think that the work we did in Professor Perry’s class can have such a visible impact on other students needing words of encouragement.”
Perry invites viewers to take from the tree “any message that speaks to them.”
