Baylor students excel in Japanese language competition

Once again, Baylor students taking part in Japanese language competition across Texas are taking top honors.

At the Dallas Regional Japanese Speech Contest on Feb. 20, four Baylor students took part. When it came time to hand out awards, Baylor students grabbed the top three spots in the competition. The winners were:

  • First place: Sean Nixon, a senior Baylor Business Fellows and finance major who is minoring in Japanese;
  • Second place: Grace Lu, a senior media business major who is minoring in Japanese; and
  • Third place: Jimmy Ta, a senior film and digital media major.

Yinjiao Li, a senior media business major with a Japanese minor, also competed in the regional meet.

Texas State 1st

The first and second places finishes in regional competition by Nixon and Lu qualified them to take part in the Texas State Japanese Speech Contest March 19 at Rice University in Houston. In the state meet, Nixon won first place and received a $1,500 scholarship from the Japan-America Society of Greater Houston.

The Baylor team’s sponsor is Dr. Yuko Prefume, senior lecturer in Japanese and director of the Baylor in Japan program. Congratulations to Dr. Prefume and her students for all of their hard work!
