Working for Dr. Phil

Many students in the Baylor College of Arts & Sciences complete internships before they graduate, designed to give them hands-on experience in their chosen fields. And sometimes, those internships lead to working with some well-known people.

Chloe Fisher, a junior theater performance major from Plano, is minoring in film and digital media and has spent the past five months doing an internship at the “Dr. Phil” show in Los Angeles. The talk show, hosted by clinical psychologist Phil McGraw, provides its guests with advice in the form of “life strategies” from Dr. Phil’s professional experience and training. In its 12th season, it’s the No. 1 ranked syndicated daytime talk show in the U.S.

Fisher said her time working for Dr. Phil has been “an incredible experience.”

“I served as the intern to the executive producer of the show, as well as an intern on a production team,” Fisher said. “Both of these jobs allowed me to network with so many different people. I have done so many various tasks –– it’s somewhat difficult to list them all down. I have done everything from answering phones to hands-on work for a taping of the show. It’s been really exciting! In my time here, I have worked with my assigned production team on eight different episodes of Dr. Phil (and) each one was rewarding in its own unique way. Every day I learned something new.”

As the accompanying photo proves, Fisher was successful in getting Dr. Phil to learn a cherished Baylor tradition.

“When I asked Dr. Phil if he would do a ‘Sic ‘em’ with me, all he asked was that I teach him how,” she said. “He’s from Texas, so he is familiar with Baylor, and he actually lived in Waco for a brief time.”

Fisher said her internship experience will not only help her with her remaining Baylor studies, but will be valuable as she begins to look for full-time work.

“I’m so thankful to be walking away from this internship with a much clearer idea of what I want to do after I graduate from Baylor in 2015,” Fisher said. “My internship has been such a wonderful learning experience. I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
