  1. In response to your last question: a lot of them. Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and Easter as gift-giving bonanzas. Weddings that now cost an average of $25,000. When I lived in North Carolina, the beach tourism lobby killed off proposals to switch to year-round school, thus maintaining a school calendar originally built around the agricultural economy but now just really inconvenient for parents (and counter-productive for learning). We think of these things as traditions, but they could all be done differently.
