New Faculty Members Join Baylor School of Education [09/15/2017]


The School of Education welcomed five new full-time faculty members for the 2017-18 academic year, including additions in each academic department. A couple are familiar faces, while others are new to Baylor.

Dr. Jessica Akers has worked with children with autism and related disabilities in home-, center-, and school-based programs targeting both skill acquisition and the reduction of challenging behavior.

Her research interests include strategies for promoting appropriate social and play skills and verbal behavior in individuals with autism and related disabilities. She is primarily interested in targeting appropriate play between children with autism and their typically developing peers and siblings. She has published her research in journals including the Journal of Applied Behavior AnalysisLearning and Motivation, and The Analysis of Verbal Behavior. Continue Reading →

iEngage Civics Camp Launches July 31 [07/28/2017]

U.S. Rep. Bill Flores and representatives from more than a dozen area agencies will be part of the week-long iEngage Summer Civics Institute at Baylor School of Education, beginning July 31. More than 100 fifth- through ninth-graders will learn about civics, government, and advocacy through the curriculum developed by co-founders Dr. Brooke Blevins and Dr. Karon LeCompte, both associate professors in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction.

Research published by the pair has demonstrated that children attending iEngage Summer Civics Institute enhance their understanding of community issues and the importance of civic responsibility.

“Following camp attendance, students demonstrated higher scores in their ability to organize a meeting, express their views in front of a group of people, write an opinion letter for the local newspaper, or contact an elected official,” Blevins said.

“That child is a natural leader.” That’s something you might have heard, or maybe you’ve even said it. But is it true?

In the following Q&A, Baylor University’s Karon LeCompte, Ph.D., associate professor of curriculum and instruction and an expert on civics education and leadership theory, discusses the importance of investing in student leaders and how parents and teachers can identify leadership characteristics in their children.

LeCompte co-directs Baylor’s iEngage Summer Civics Institute (July 31-Aug. 4), a five-day program that helps students learn how to make a difference in their neighborhoods, schools and communities.

“Authentic leaders with experiences that manifest characteristics of extensive skills and high moral values will be on the front stage of our democracy,” she said. “They are the future. It is our responsibility to give them the best gifts that we can – our attention and faith in their ability to lead.

School of Education Associate Professor Dr. Doug Rogers Elected President of National Association [02/22/2017]

Doug Rogers, Ed.D., associate professor in the Baylor School of Education, will be inducted as the president of the National Association of Professional Development Schools (NAPDS) on March 10, 2017, at the organization’s annual conference in Washington, D.C. Elected by a vote of all members, Rogers has served as president-elect since last year.

Baylor Enrichment Program Targets Early Math Learners [07/24/2016]

MELA-1A pilot program sponsored by Baylor School of Education’s Department of Curriculum & Instruction aims to impact math understanding in pre-kindergarten children in Waco.

During July, the School of Education is conducting a pilot program in early math intervention, the Math for Early Learners Academy (MELA). The brainchild of Dr. Sandi Cooper, professor in math education, the four-week camp targets 4-5 year olds who are entering kindergarten and need help building number sense, based on assessments.

“We are excited to host MELA at the Mayborn Museum, so the children can have informal learning experiences in math while interacting with the museum exhibits, in addition to in-the-classroom curriculum,” Cooper said. Continue Reading →

Baylor Ghana Mission Trip Has Lasting Impact on SOE Student-Faculty Duo [06/30/2016]

If you asked Baylor University senior Branda Greening a year ago about her vision for education and her plan for the future, she might have said education was the “window of opportunity” and her life plans were determined. When asked those questions now, Greening’s response is drastically different. 

In the fall of Greening’s junior year, her education professor, Dr. Lakia Scott, invited Greening on Baylor Missions’ annual Ghana Leadership mission trip. In May 2016, Scott and Greening embarked on a trip that challenged their views of education. 

“I had my life figured out until I came here,” Greening said of the Ghana trip. While she still plans to become a teacher, Greening’s passion has expanded.

SOE Grad Students Present Action Research at CSOTTE [01/20/2016]

Three Baylor graduate students presented research posters in the “Emerging Scholars Track” at the annual conference of the Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education (CSOTTE) in the fall.

CSOTTE-Jordan-blog-325Jordan Barlow, Shannon King and Mollie Musgrove attended the 2015 conference and presented the in-classroom action research that they had conducted while School of Education seniors serving as teaching interns. Barlow and King are master’s candidates in the Department of Educational Psychology, and Musgrove is a master’s candidate in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction.

Barlow, who earned her BSEd in elementary education, conducted research in five sixth-grade science classes, exploring the best avenues for teaching science vocabulary words and whether allowing students a choice in their learning activities would make a difference. Continue Reading →

SOE’s Dr. Karon LeCompte Becomes Faculty-in-Residence for Leadership LLC [10/16/2015]

Dr. Karon LeCompte, faculty-in-residence in the Leadership LLC, and her husband, Randy, love to welcome students to their new home in Dawson-Allen Hall.

When Dr. Karon LeCompte and her husband, Randy, moved into a new home this summer, it was a nice, quiet spot. That all changed on Aug. 19.

An assistant professor in the Baylor School of Education, LeCompte is serving as faculty-in-residence (FIR) at Baylor’s Leadership Living-Learning Center. She and Randy occupy a 2000-square-foot, three-bedroom apartment in Allen-Dawson Hall, living alongside more than 300 Baylor students, with more than two-thirds of them freshmen. Most of the students in Allen-Dawson are pursuing an academic minor in leadership through the School of Education.

“It was quiet when we first came,” Randy said. “But once the students arrived, there’s just an electricity in the air.” Continue Reading →

Carrying on Connections: From Third Grader to BU Grad Assistant [10/02/2015]

Baylor is a small world where everybody knows someone. But most people do not get to reunite with their elementary school teacher.

Evan Ditmore came to Baylor this fall as a graduate student and research assistant in the School of Education in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction in language arts. He knew he would be placed with a professor. He also knew that his former third grade teacher, Dr. Suzanne Nesmith, now held a position as associate professor in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. Now Ditmore and Nesmith are reunited. They flow back and forth between reminiscing about their shared third-grade past (1997-98) and working together as graduate assistant and mentor, reconnecting at Baylor after following varied paths.
