Baylor School of Education Moves up in U.S. News Rankings [03/17/2016]

Dr. Sunny Wells received her doctoral degree in August 2015, assisted by School of Education faculty members Dr. Tony Talbert and Dr. Brooke Blevins.

Baylor School of Education moved up five slots to No. 78 in the 2017 U.S. News Best Graduate Schools rankings, released March 16, 2016. Baylor School of Education is in the top three graduate schools of education in Texas and the top 20 schools at private universities in the U.S.

Dr. Michael McLendon, dean of the Baylor School of Education, said of the new ranking, “Our current standing within these rankings demonstrates the growing talent and productivity of our faculty and students, as we dedicate ourselves to higher levels of excellence across our graduate and professional programs.”

To determine the rankings, U.S. News surveyed 376 schools granting education doctoral degrees. The rankings were calculated on a weighted average of 10 measures of quality that included feedback from deans of education and deans of graduate studies, student selectivity calculations, faculty resources and research activity.

Baylor School of Education offers graduate degrees in three departments:

Department of Curriculum & Instruction:

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Curriculum & Teaching Degree prepares graduates for university-based leadership in the field of Curriculum & Teaching. Requirements include 71 semester hours and a successful completion and defense of a dissertation.
The Doctor of Education Degree (EdD) is a professional degree that concentrates on the use of curriculum and instruction theory, educational research and practitioner knowledge to improve educational practice. The degree requires a minimum of 45 hours of coursework in Curriculum and Instruction as well as a 15-hour cognate specialization.
The Master of Arts (MA) degree is designed to develop a scholarly understanding of education thought and practice. The MA requires 33 semester hours, including the completion and defense of a thesis, and a 12 hour minor in educational foundations, instructional technology, language and literacy, or mathematics education.
The Master of Science of Education (MSEd) is designed to improve educational practice and to provide preparation for continued graduate studies in education. The MSEd requires 36 semester hours including a 15-hour cognate specialization.

Department of Educational Administration:

Baylor’s PhD in Higher Education offers graduate apprenticeships that cover tuition and pay a competitive stipend. Apprenticeships offer students hands-on administrative and research practice. 72 hours of coursework is required and includes a 3-hour research internship and 9 hours for the dissertation.
Doctor of Education (EdD) in K-12 Educational Leadership is a cohort-based program designed for the dedicated working education professional, emphasizing complex problem solving for educational leaders. Requirements include 48 hours of coursework, 11 hours of clinical experience, and a 6-hour-credit dissertation.
The Master’s of Science (MSEd) in Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) offers the only master’s program in higher education and student affairs from a national research university that incorporates student development, administrative theory, and faith into the curriculum. Following the completion of coursework, students can choose between a capstone course or a research thesis.
Master of Science (MSEd) with Principal Certification is a program designed for working educators who are interested in a graduate program that also explores the role of principal as a values-centered instructional leader. Coursework is 36 semester hours, and the cohort program format offers small classes to best facilitate field-based and problem-based learning.
Master’s Degree (MSEd) in Sport Management was one of the early programs in the United States that was approved by the NASPE-NASSM Sport Management Program Review Council. Requirements include 36 coursework hours in sport management specifics such as personnel, ethics, legal, marketing and public relations courses, plus a comprehensive exam.

Department of Educational Psychology:

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Educational Psychology degree requires a minimum of 65 graduate hours plus 9 hours of dissertation. Students take courses in three primary strands, two supporting strands, and a minor area of study.
The Education Specialist (EdS) in School Psychology
 is a cohort-based practitioner-oriented program that is fully approved by the National Association of School Psychologists. The program prepares students to meet the learning, behavior, and mental health needs of individuals in school-based settings using evidence-based assessment and interventions. Degree requirements include coursework, field-based training, and a year-long internship.
The Master of Arts (MA) is a research-focused program that may be seen as a step towards PhD graduate study in Educational Psychology or a related field. The MA requires 30 hours of coursework, plus completion of a master’s thesis. Specializations in the BCBA and GT tracks are available, along with a Quantitative Methods specialization.
The Master of Science in Education (MSEd) offers advanced study in educational research and measurement, learning and development, multicultural issues, and exceptionalities. Specializations that lead to either the Board Certification in Behavior Analysis (BCBA) or gifted and talented (GT) supplemental teacher certification are also options within the MSEd program. The MSEd requires a minimum of 36 hours of graduate coursework, 21 of which are core courses in Educational Psychology.
