Research opportunities for faculty and doctoral students at DOE’s Jefferson Lab

Jefferson Science Associates, LLC has announced two funding programs to support temporary research appointments for graduate students and faculty members at the Department of Energy’s Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in Newport News, Virgina.

For faculty: Sabbatical and Research Leave Support

The Sabbatical and Research Leave Support program provides funding for faculty to conduct full-time research at Jefferson Lab for a period of up to nine months. Applications are due by March 31, 2016. Click here to learn more about the program and application processes.

For graduate students: Graduate Fellowship Program

The Graduate Fellowship Program provides opportunities for doctoral students to work alongside Jefferson Lab researchers on projects related to the lab’s mission. Applications are due by Feb. 29, 2016. Click here for more information on the program and its application procedure.

Social science funding opportunity from the U.S. Department of Defense

United_States_Department_of_Defense_Seal.svgThe U.S. Department of Defense is accepting proposals for social science research on topics related to the nation’s security policy under its Minerva Research Initiative.

Under the current funding announcement, DoD seeks to support projects in the following five areas listed below:

  1. Identity, influence and mobilization; culture, identity and security; influence and mobilization for change
  2. Contributors to societal resilience and change; governance and rule of law; migration and urbanization; populations and demographics; environment and natural resources; economics
  3. Power and deterrence; global order; power projection and diffusion; beyond conventional deterrence; area studies
  4. Analytical methods and metrics for security research
  5. Innovations in national security, conflict and cooperation

CUR offers travel grants for undergraduate researchers

The Council on Undergraduate Research is currently offering two separate travel grants for undergraduate students who haveCouncil on Undergraduate Research completed research in either social science or biology. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2014-2015 fiscal year. There are a select number of travel grants available, ranging from $200 to $250.

This opportunity is designed for students who have already completed their research and who are planning to present their findings at local, regional, or other professional venues. Students of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply but must meet the requirements noted for each travel grant.

Reminder: Internal pre-proposals for NSF MRI program due Dec. 11

https://www.nsf.gov/od/oia/programs/mri/The National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program provides funds for the acquisition or development of science or engineering instruments for research or research training.

Because applications to the program are limited, the OVPR conducts an internal competition to determine which proposals will be certified to represent Baylor with a full proposal to the NSF.  Internal pre-proposals are due to the OVPR on Dec. 11, 2014.

Funding opportunity: NIH Loan Repayment Programs

NIH_LogoTo encourage outstanding professionals to pursue careers in biomedical, behavioral, social, and clinical research, the National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) offer to repay student loans for individuals conducting qualified research funded by a domestic nonprofit organization or U.S. federal, state, or local government entity.

The LRPs may repay up to $35,000 of qualified student loan debt per year for individuals who make a two-year commitment to qualified research programs.  The program can be used for repayment of student debt accrued in undergraduate, graduate or medical school.  In addition to the loan repayment benefits, students will also receive an institutional salary for their research.
