Funding opportunity: NSF Major Research Instrumentation program

https://www.nsf.gov/od/oia/programs/mri/The National Science Foundation’s Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) program provides funds for the acquisition or development of science or engineering instruments for research or research training.

Because applications to the program are limited, the OVPR conducts an internal competition to determine which proposals will be certified to represent Baylor with a full proposal to the NSF.  Internal pre-proposals are due to the OVPR on Oct. 11, 2016.

Click here for information and instructions on submitting pre-proposals for the MRI program.  Click here for more information about the NSF MRI program.

Limited submission opportunity: NEH Summer Stipends

Through its Summer Stipends program, the National Endowment for the Humanities supports individuals pursuing advanced research of value to humanities scholars, general audiences or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions or other scholarly materials. Summer Stipends are awarded to individual scholars and support continuous, full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two months during summer 2015.

Organizations are limited in the number of proposals they may submit to the NEH, so the OVPR holds an internal competition to determine which Baylor applications will go forward. Internal letters of intent are due to the OVPR by Aug. 22. Full proposals for the selected projects are due to the NEH by Oct. 1, 2016.

Click here for more information and application instructions for the internal competition. You may also click here to view information about the program from the NEH.

Funding Opportunity Announcement: NCAA-DoD Mind Matters Challenge

NCAA-DOD3The NCAA and the U.S. Department of Defense have released the RFP for the “Mind Matters Challenge,” a program that funds research and education programs on concussion reporting and treatment.  The program has two focus areas: “Changing attitudes about concussions in young and emerging adults” (a research challenge) and “Educational programs targeting young and emerging adults” (an educational programs challenge).

The research challenge will award up to 10 grants of $400,000 each for projects aimed at studying the mechanisms influencing cultural change around concussion reporting in the target population.  The education challenge will award up to ten grants of $25,000 each to help investigators create compelling and impactful educational materials for student-athletes and other at-risk populations in the area of concussion education.

The deadline to apply for both the research and education programs is Thursday, Jan. 9, 2015.  Click here for more information about the programs and application instructions.

Funding opportunity: The Self, Motivation & Virtue Project

Marquette University, with a generous grant from the Templeton Religion Trust, has announced a new research initiative to promote collaboration between scientists and humanities scholars on the topics of the self, motivation, and virtue. Approximately ten research proposals of $190,000 each will be funded through this initiative.

Successful teams will be comprised of at least one humanities scholar and one scientist who are fully and equally invested in the research project from its inception to its completion. The aim of the program is to encourage awardees to think outside of their own disciplinary perspectives, and to broaden their research horizons in ways conducive to creative collaborations and results.  Research collaborations between younger and more established scholars are especially encouraged.

Awards are intended to support research from September 1, 2015 through May 31, 2017 (two academic years and one summer).

More information, the full request for proposals and application instructions are available on the Self, Motivation & Virtue Project website. Letters of intent are due no later than November 15, 2014, and must be submitted online. Full proposals are accepted by invitation only, and will be due no later than June 1, 2015. Contact smvproject@marquette.edu with questions about the program.

NCAA, DoD extend deadline to request information on concussion education research grant

NCAA-DOD3Earlier this month, we told you about the Mind Matters Challenge, an upcoming funding opportunity offered through an alliance between the NCAA and the U.S. Department of Defense.

The program will provide faculty in science, art, marketing and education fields with grants of up to $400,000 for research on ways to change the culture surrounding concussion reporting and treatment.

The NCAA is currently requesting contact information for university faculty who wish to be notified when the grant program officially launches this fall. Initially, organizers had asked for researcher contact information by Sept. 15, but the deadline has been extended to Oct. 15.

Click here to fill out a short form requesting information on the Mind Matters Challenge.
