Why International Missions?

I have recently had some conversations about short term missions and feel I should clarify our work in Africa and the larger vision for all of the planned mission/global work that is done at the Louise Herrington School of Nursing.

   I find that I have a plethora of people contacting me about mission opportunities that could use grad RN student support. I spend a good deal of time working to ensure that our global outreach meets the needs of our students education and the health and health teaching needs of the people we serve.

     It is nice to be able to plug into an ongoing hospital or clinic and we have included that for a portion of each of the Africa trips. Mission clinics and hospitals can be good places to learn from other providers and support an ongoing outreach.  But not all people that need care have access to a clinic or hospital. That is one of the reasons for short term trips. Continue reading

Out of Africa

This was sent out a day or two after arriving home from the March 2008 trip to Ethiopia and Uganda.

Hello Everyone,

    Communication turned out to be much more challenging than I had anticipated. Sorry for the sparse contact.

    It was an amazing trip. I am still processing all that we did and have 700 photos to sort through. Our last leg of the trip we were at Sabina children’s home in the Rakai district of rural Uganda. There we treated all the children in the home and several neighboring schools. Close to 600 children in 5 days. Wow! The Baylor NP students were amazing. I heard children encouraged to stay in school, reassurance about growth and development for preadolescent boys and girls. Tooth brushing and hand washing, eating well and making good choices were all imparted during one on one time with the children. Continue reading
