March 2019 Intern Spotlight

The March 2019 Intern Spotlight is on Salwa Rahaman.  Salwa completed her Health Science Studies internship at Texan Allergy & Sinus Center with Kris Bartee, MSN, ACNPC-A.  During her 150 supervised clock hour internship, she learned about environmental & food allergy testing, treatment and how an allergy office is run at one of their sixteen locations in Texas.  One of the highlights of her internship was observing balloon sinuplasty procedures performed by Dr. Paul Fulmer to reduce symptoms of rhinosinusitis.  Sic ’em!

 

February 2019 Intern Spotlight

The February 2019 Intern Spotlight is on Nicole Smith.  Nicole completed her Health Science Studies Pre-Physician Assistant internship with a certified OB/GYN Physician Assistant.  During her 150 supervised clock hour internship, she learned how to put to use the knowledge she gained in human anatomy & physiology, maternal & infant health, and human diseases classes at Baylor.  Sic’em!

 

January 2019 Intern Spotlight

The January 2019 Intern Spotlight is on Georgia Beatty.  Georgia completed her Exercise Physiology internship at Athlete Training & Health with strength and conditioning coach and coordinator Chris Holt MS, CSCS, CPT, USAW.  She learned how to put to use the knowledge she gained in his techniques of strength & conditioning, facilities & equipment and exercise & sports nutrition classes at Baylor.  During her 300 supervised clock-hour internship, she shadowed classes, cleaned equipment, explored Athlete Training and Health’s curriculum and welcomed guests into the facility. December 2018 Intern Spotlight

 

The December 2018 Intern Spotlight is on Corinne Delius.  Corinne completed her Health Science Studies Pre-Vet internship at Circle C Animal Hospital in Austin, TX. Under the direction of the hospital owner and veterinarian, she learned how to identify specimen under the microscope so that proper treatment could be made for the animals.  During her 150 supervised clock-hour internship, she shadowed the vet during surgery and well visits, learned the surgery board lingo and was an excellent set of hands caring for the animals, mostly felines and canines.  Sic’em!

November 2018 Intern Spotlight

The November 2018 Intern Spotlight is on Angela Zuniga .  Angela completed her Dance Minor internship at Joy’s School of Dance under the direction of Natalie George. She taught skill classes and organized costumes for the company’s large spring dance recital.  During her 150 supervised clock-hour internship, she created campaigns on social media for the studio and learned behind-the-scenes details from the office manager. October 2018 Intern Spotlight

The October 2018 Intern Spotlight is on Richard Fuentes.  Richard completed his Exercise Physiology internship at the D1 Sports Training facility. He shadowed the strength coaches during specialized classes and camps.  He also cleaned, re-racked weights and completed inventory routine checks.  During his 300 supervised clock-hour internship, he learned procedures of a large workout facility and climbed up the intern ladder. September 2018 Intern Spotlight

The September 2018 Intern Spotlight is on Micaela Anderson.  Micaela completed her Health Science Studies Pre-Dental internship at the Madison Cooper Clinic – Family Health Center. She shadowed the dentist and dental hygienists through routine check-ups and fillings.  During her 150 supervised clock-hour internship, she learned procedures and created a brochure to include the damaging effects of juice for children’s teeth for the clinic to disperse. August 2018 Intern Spotlight

The August 2018 Intern Spotlight is on Katie Carleton.  Katie completed her Health Science Studies internship at Pediatric Eye Specialists. Under the direction of Partner Dr. Michael Hunt, she learned how to put to use the knowledge she gained in her anatomy and physiology classes at Baylor.  During her 150 supervised clock-hour internship, she shadowed the ophthalmologist during office visits, cleaned equipment and attended surgical eye procedures.  Neat fact about Dr. Michael Hunt:  He is an 1995 graduate from Baylor University and he helped research (with Baylor faculty) and invent the iPhone and Android App to detect a pediatric eye disorder. The July 2018 Intern Spotlight is on Ryan Bobo.  Ryan completed his Exercise Physiology internship at D1 Sports Training Waco. Under the direction of the Level 1 Sports Performance Coach Tanner Lowry, he learned how to put to use the knowledge he gained in his techniques of strength & conditioning, facilities & equipment and exercise & sports nutrition classes at Baylor.  During his 300 supervised clock-hour internship, he attended/shadowed classes, cleaned equipment and climbed the ladder of the D1 intern program.  Sic’em!

Under the direction of the Director Dr. Erik Steinke, she learned how to put to use the knowledge she gained in her anatomy, physiology and exercise & sports nutrition classes at Baylor.  During her 300 supervised clock-hour internship, she shadowed the physical therapists, cleaned equipment and learned modalities.  Sic’em!

The April 2018 Intern Spotlight is on Colton Ping .  Colton completed his Health Science Studies internship at Baylor’s Wellness Department. Under the direction of the Director Dr. Meg Patterson, he learned how to put to use the knowledge he gained in health and human behavior classes at Baylor.  During his 150 supervised clock-hour internship, he attended/shadowed classes, welcomed students daily at the booth during freshman orientation and helped promote Wellness at Baylor.  Sic’em!

The March 2018 Intern Spotlight is on Aaron Walker.  Aaron completed his Exercise Physiology internship at Crossfit Waco. Under the direction of the strength and conditioning coach and owner, he learned how to put to use the knowledge he gained in his techniques of strength & conditioning, facilities & equipment and exercise & sports nutrition classes at Baylor.  During his 300 supervised clock-hour internship, he attended/shadowed classes, cleaned equipment and eventually was able to teach some classes.  Sic’em!

 

February 2018 Intern Spotlight

The February 2018 Intern Spotlight is on Melissa Lounsbury.  Melissa completed her Health Science Studies Health Professions major with a minor in Public Health internship at Mission Waco/Mission World. Under the direction of the President and Executive Director, Dr. Jimmy Dorrell, she learned about the 15 different mission fields available at Mission Waco.  She also worked on projects including reward cards with the Jubilee Food Market and aquaponic gardens for kale and romaine lettuce production.  Sic’em!

January 2018 Intern Spotlight

The January 2018 Intern Spotlight is on Jordan Pruitt.  Jordan completed his Health Science Studies Pre-PT internship at MedCenter Rehab in San Antonio in Physical Therapy. As a ROTC cadet, Jordan was interested in interning with a former service member.  During his internship he shadowed the DPTs and PTAs in both outpatient physical therapy and work recovery.   Sic’em!

December 2017 Intern Spotlight

The December 2017 Intern Spotlight is on Mackenzie Haines.  Mackenzie completed her Exercise Physiology internship at the Baylor Exercise and Biochemical Nutrition Lab on a research study. Under the direction of Dr. Darryn Willoughby, during her internship she worked on a project entitled, “Skeletal Muscle Estrogen Receptor Activation in Response to Eccentric Exercise Up-Regulates Myogenic-Related Gene Expression Independent of Differing Serum Estradiol Levels Occurring During the Human Menstrual Cycle” and it has just been accepted for publication in the Journal of Sport Science and Medicine for the March 2018 issue.  Sic’em!

 

September 2017 Intern Spotlight

The September 2017 Intern Spotlight is on Erika Reese.  Erika completed her Health Science Studies internship at Steps2Strides Therapy Center in Abilene, TX. Erika was able to brighten each pediatric physical therapy patient’s day by welcoming them and staying with them during their therapy sessions.  She saw real-world application of her HSS curriculum come to life while shadowing the physical therapist.  Sic’em!

The August 2017 Intern Spotlight is on Anthony Madrid.  Anthony completed his Exercise Physiology internship at Baylor Athletic Performance. An internship with Baylor Athletics allowed Anthony to apply the theories/principles he learned in his exercise physiology and techniques of strength & conditioning courses to increase performance in collegiate athletes.  Sic’em

June 2017 Intern Spotlight

The June Intern Spotlight is on Samantha Cohen-Winans.  Samantha completed her Exercise Physiology Internship at McKenzie Chiropractic Center.  She learned about virtually every part of the chiropractic clinic including chiropractic care, scheduling, insurance payment and inventory.  She is most interested in the muscles associated with a healthy spine and movement necessary for exercise.  Sic ’em!

May 2017 Intern Spotlight

The May Intern Spotlight is on Kelsey Johnson.  Kelsey completed her Dance Minor Internship at Joy’s School of Dance with Natalie George.  She created a look-book of all recital costumes as well as organized/packaged over 500 new costumes for ballet, tap and jazz.  She also presented a nutrition lesson to the youth dancers so they can make healthy decisions at meal-time.   Sic’em!

 

April 2017 Intern Spotlight

The April 2017 Intern Spotlight is on Evan Garr.  Evan completed his Exercise Physiology internship at Foundation Physical Therapy with Stephanie Compean, PT, MPT. Evan cleaned therapy benches and equipment, changed pillow cases, and observed the PTs give therapy.  Foundation PT has an innovative product for increasing muscle mass while doing non-weight bearing exercises called a PTS by Delfi, which is blood flow restriction training, pictured below.  Sic’em!

 

March 2017 Intern Spotlight

The March 2017 Intern Spotlight is on Haley Griffin. Haley completed her Health Science Studies Internship at Elite Therapy Center with Kari McKown MOT, OTR. She created a locker storage system that housed items needed for the patients to achieve their activity for daily living/learning. She also made an activity board used for bilateral coordination. Sic’em!

January 2017 Intern Spotlight

The January Intern Spotlight is on Yasmin Kiper.  Yasmin completed her Exercise Physiology Internship in Cardiac Rehab with Tootie Murry.  She checked patients in, took their blood pressure & heart rate and helped attach leads.  Yasmin worked with patients on beginning stretches, warm-ups and learned how to monitor the leads to determine cardiac output. Sic’em!

December 2016 Intern Spotlight

The December Intern Spotlight is on Jenna Itani.  Jenna completed her Health Science Studies Internship at Dallas Outpatient Therapy Services for Kids [DOTS].  She interned with occupational therapist, Kelsey Sinclair, MOT, OTR.  Jenna would take the clients through the obstacle course in preparation for therapy and then shadow the therapist during sessions.  She also played games with the pediatric occupational therapy patients to help increase their bilateral coordination. November 2016 Intern Spotlight

The November Intern Spotlight is on Grant Hallbauer.  Grant completed his Health Science Studies Pre-Med Internship at Family Medical Associates of Conroe. Grant shadowed physicians and gave seminars to patients about diabetes and how they can change their diet to reduce the number of carbohydrates consumed daily.  This included a session to the staff to educate them on diet change for use with patients. Grant was able to increase awareness of hidden sugar in common foods.  Sic’em!

October 2016 Intern Spotlight

The October Intern Spotlight is on Greg Garrett.  Greg completed his Exercise Physiology Internship at D1 Sports Training. Greg led training groups/classes, cleaned equipment, set out equipment needed for classes like kettle bells, agility ladders, and battle ropes and also spotted weight-lifters.  He has learned about the strength and conditioning aspects of exercise physiology and has decided he would like to start his career in strength and conditioning following graduation.  Sic’em!

September 2016 Intern Spotlight

The September Intern Spotlight is on Paige Thumann.  Paige completed her Health Science Studies Internship with optometrist, Dr. Paul Puntney.  Paige checked the patients in, ran the pre-optometry visit tests and set up the patient in the exam room.  She also did contact lens fittings and taught contact lens classes.  She was even hired by the company. Sic’em!

August 2016 Intern Spotlight

The August Intern Spotlight is Matt McCullough.  Matt completed his Exercise Physiology Internship in the BLEST and EBNL Research Lab at Baylor University.  Matt researches three days a week and does data collection two days a week.  He spins the collected blood vials in the centrifuge, separates the serum into a special tube and then sends it off for testing to use for a research study.  He would like to pursue a doctorate in EP after graduation.  Sic ’em!
