Healthcare Operations: Experiental Learning Project

For the first five weeks of the semester, Core Two students have Operations Strategy. For Healthcare MBA students, the Core Two operations class is taught by Glenn Robinson, the CEO of Waco’s Hillcrest Hospital.

Having the class taught by Mr. Robinson is an incredible opportunity for us to not only learn from his personal experiences, but to also ask him our own questions about healthcare administration. It’s only been a few weeks so far and my classmates and I have already learned a great deal from him.

One of the major components of this class is an Experiental Learning project. We also did this project in the fall as a part of our healthcare course. Last semester I had the opportunity to visit both the pharmacy and the marketing department. After visiting both of the departments my partner and I shared our experience with our classmates in a presentation. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and felt like I learned a great deal so I am excited about the opportunity to visit more departments this semester.

This semester my classmates and I were all assigned new partners and new departments to visit. This time, I will be visiting Plant Operations/Security and Surgery/Sterilization. I am excited to visit both of these departments. I know that although security is more of a behind the scenes department, they are essential to a safe and secure hospital for patients and their visitors. I am also really excited to see the process of sterilizing surgical tools. One of my personal healthcare interests is quality and I am interested in infection control procedures that hospitals utilize both to keep patients safe and to reduce costs.

We will be presenting our presentation in early February, and I am looking forward to sharing what I’ve learned and seeing what my classmates have learned as well!
