Yesterday, Monday the 11th I began my adventure as an intern at Raven + Lily and am already loving it! Walking in yesterday morning I had no idea what to expect and I was relieved to be greeted with a room full of smiling faces. Despite being a little over-dressed, I felt right at home. The office is a simple studio space with several different rooms, decorated with inspiration boards and Raven + Lily designs.
First things first, my supervisor and I sat down to go through what my duties will be this summer and the different projects we will tackle. Next there was a staff meeting where I got to see a little bit of what goes on during the week as everyone caught each other up on what was happening in the office. I spent the rest of the day researching different things on the internet, making a bead chart and a few other tasks. I was also able to collaborate with my supervisor on a display design and we presented it this morning.
On my lunch break I went down the street to a unique area that has delicious food trucks set up, one of the many reasons why Austin is such a fun city!
I also got to see a video called ‘The girl effect’, a short clip on the importance of girls staying in school. It explained the fate of many girls in impoverished countries and how, given the chance, their lives could be completely different. This morning I was able to spend more time researching for and assisting my supervisor. The most exciting thing to happen today was discovering that I will be able to design a clothing collection this summer. It will be such a great experience for me, and I will be able to see what all takes place from the design stage to production. I will be in charge of sourcing my own material and pricing my garments.
I have begun this project by deciding what my inspirations will be and compiling an inspiration board. The board will consist of pictures of the color palette, flow and silhouette, and patterns and prints. Now that I have compiled many of my inspiration photos, I will filter it down to what really goes well together. Once this is complete I will begin the design process! Tonight I will continue to brainstorm and compile my ideas so that tomorrow morning I will be able to start designing.
