Faculty Interest Group (FIG):
“Creating Significant Learning Experiences”
Facilitators: Gia Chevis (Accounting and Business Law) and Byron Newberry (Mechanical Engineering)
Overview:
In this FIG, we’ll explore ways to make our courses transformative experiences for students, where “covering content” is done in service of larger goals rather than as an end in itself. Using L. Dee Fink’s book Creating Significant Learning Experiences as a guide, we’ll think deeply about what it is we truly want our students to take away from their encounters with our disciplines. We’ll brainstorm ways big and small to incorporate meaningful, authentic activities into our courses…and renew our own senses of purpose while we’re at it. We’ll meet from 12:15 – 1:45 in the Faculty Center, leading with lunch and starting the discussion around 12:30. We welcome those who would need to depart early for a 1:30 class.
- Meeting dates: 2/5, 2/27, 3/27, and 4/24.
- The Academy for Teaching and Learning has graciously agreed to provide a copy of the book for each participant.
- Please contact Theresa Williams (x4064) or email at Theresa_Williams@baylor.edu for your copy.
