Baylor student journalists win national awards

Staff writers and photographers on the Baylor Lariat continue to win national acclaim and honors for the quality of their work. The Associated Collegiate Press recently announced that three current and former staffers on the Lariat have been recognized for outstanding work done in the 2011-2012 academic year.

Matt Hellman, a senior journalism, public relations and new media major from Austin, is a national finalist in the ACP “Spot News Photography” competition. (Matt’s winning spot news photo entry is shown at left). The final results of the Spot News competition will be announced Nov. 3. Matt also received honorable mentions in the competitions for “Design of the Year — Illustration” and “Multimedia Story of the Year — Photo Slideshow.”

Meagan Downing, a junior journalism, public relations and new media major from Snyder, Texas, received honorable mention in the “Sports Photography” competition. (Meagan’s winning photo is shown at right). Meanwhile, Rob Bradfield, a senior journalism, public relations and new media major, received an honorable mention for his entry in the “Story of the Year — Diversity” category competition.

Paul Carr, director of Baylor student publications, said the five ACP awards received by Baylor students brings the current total of awards earned by Baylor student journalists during the 2011-2012 academic year to 87.
