Spring Beginnings

By Aaron Carter

It’s been just over a week since Spring Break and Baylor is starting to buzz again. After a short lull while we students shuffled about the post-break doldrums, we’ve gotten back into the grind and are ready to face the rest of the semester. Everyone is outside, it seems, taking in the sun and greeting warmer weather. Some of us are energized by the weather, others of us are starting to feel the pressure. When the weather gets warmer during the Spring semester, it comes to some of us as a looming omen. Finals first, then the end of another semester, another school year, and even, for seniors, the end of a chapter of life.

Although, I don’t think it does any good to think about Spring in that way. It isn’t the season about endings, after all. Being worried about what comes next is hardly the best way to spend these days. For now, the weather is warm enough to be out in shorts, but not hot enough to drive us into the air-conditioning. The waking grass is a bright apple green and the trees are starting to bud.

Take a walk. Baylor looks stunning right now, all dressed in green leaves and golden sunlight. It’s more than a shame to spend all your time studying or working. It’s a loss. If there is ever a time to allow distraction, it’s now.

Also, if you can’t spare the time to go out right now, then hold fast. Dia is coming.

75° in February?!

By Marisela Martin

I haven’t done much recently due to a busy school schedule, and not to seem cliché or anything, but this Waco weather has everyone stunned. Now many of my friends think I’m crazy because I absolutely LOVE the winter season. However, being in Texas it’s very hard to depend on the weather. Recently in Waco we have had surge of very sporadic weather. Just last week it was in the high 60s and then Thursday it went down to the low 30s!! How crazy is that?! But this weekend was one of the prettiest weekends I have ever experienced on campus! On Saturday I was able to enjoy it with my mom who came into town. And yesterday, I decided I wanted to go outside and do some homework and it was amazing. In searching for cool study spots I got to explore a little more of campus. Even two years later I still don’t know it very well! Anyway, I really enjoyed lying out in the sun and doing homework! One of the many perks of being a college student! Here is a picture I took while studying outside:

Fall Has Arrived!

By Kilani Ju

Pic 1This week officially marked the start of the fall season, one of my favorite times of the year. I love seeing the scenery change around campus. When the leaves start to fall from the trees and the colors change from green to red, orange and yellow, it brings a huge smile to my face. After months of the hot, humid sun rays beaming down on me as I walked around campus, running from class to class and bus to bus, the cooler weather is a sigh of relief.

I love when the weather begins to feel crisp and cool throughout the day and when I’m finally able to walk around without dripping in sweat. One of the main adjustments for me when I moved to Texas from my home in California was getting accustomed to the weather, and fall weather, in my opinion, is the best weather in Texas. Nothing is more exciting than bringing out those cozy sweaters and wrapping yourself in a nice chunky circle scarf. After the first official day of fall, I found myself constantly checking the weather, waiting for those 90s to change into 70s. I live for comfy clothes, so sweaters are the key to my heart. It doesn’t get much better than throwing on that oversized sweater with your favorite pair of booties and your favorite bulky scarf. I’m excited to see the weather cool down, and the atmosphere change around campus – from tank tops to sweaters, shorts to leggings and most importantly, iced coffees to steaming hot pumpkin spiced lattes from Starbucks. The moment I saw someone wearing a sweater and discovered pumpkin spiced lattes on the Starbucks menu, I knew that fall had officially arrived.

Waco Weather…You Never Know What Could Happen

By Torie Abbott

I remember the first time I toured Baylor University my junior year of high school. The tour guide from Campus Visits specifically told my mom and I, “You are going to need a pair of rainboots because when it rains it pours and when it pours it floods.” I took her advice half-heartedly, though now I wish I would listened to her!

Waco is a Wonderland.

I do not know what it is about wacko Waco, but the weather here is insane! It’s freezing one day, 100 degrees the next and then flooding by the weekend. So, coming to Baylor, there are a few things you might want to invest in before moving into the lovely 254.

  • Rainboots: an absolutely, can’t live without, must-have.
  • An umbrella: not as important but you will be thankful you have one.
  • BRING A WINTER COAT: During freshman year, I had friends from out-of-state who waited to bring their winter coats to campus until after Thanksgiving, a decision they soon came to regret! You don’t have to bring enough to survive in the Arctic, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a couple of winter coats.
  • Scarves, gloves and warm socks: these are more useful for those cold game days, but still a good thing to have, just in case. #sicembears
  • Tennis shoes, Chacos and Pali Hawaii sandals: some sort of summer shoe is also a good idea. One, it will be hot the first couple of months you move in, and two, they are super handy at the marina and Cameron Park

So here’s the moral of this story; the weather is Waco is so unpredictable, and you never know what kind of weather you might wake up to! But that is just the beauty of living in wonderful Waco! And hey, it’s kind of fun having diversity in weather from time to time.

A Change in Weather (by PJ Martinez)

This past Saturday was by far the best way to start the weekend!  Very rarely do I wake up at 7:45 on a Saturday morning and have a productive day while doing so.  To make things even better, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect.  How great it was to step outside and have a breeze come upon you.  Truly breath taking!  So long to the 104° heat.  Hello cold front coming through.

You may wonder…why wake up at 7:45 in the morning?  I ask myself the same.  At this time, there was an event my fraternity puts on and, as a membership, we had to be there.  Afterwards, we went to Rudy’s and enjoyed their famous breakfast burritos.  Wait, breakfast burritos at Rudy’s?  Yes, they are delicious.  We sat and enjoyed our meal.

Some of the senior members in my fraternity at Rudy’s. If we look a little rough, it’s because it was still pretty early for us.

After Rudy’s we all separated and went back home.  I felt the need to be productive and actually worked on some homework.  Usually, I would wait till Sunday however that productive mood was clearly in favor.  I worked on Social Statistics, completed it, then of course had to take a nap!

I woke up in time to watch the Texas A&M and Florida game on TV.  It was such a good game and of course I was in favor for the gators.  Good thing they won.  Sic’ em Gators!

The day ended with an opportunity I wish I could have more often.  I live with 6 other roommates, and very rarely are we together all at the same time.  Well this night 5 of the 7 of us happened to all be at the house.  We were all hungry and debating on what fast food place we should eat at for the night.  Fast food is a specialty at the house!  We did some thinking, and realized that we could just simply each pitch in a grocery that we have and just cook one big meal for all of us.  We ended up making spaghetti with chicken/beef with salad and garlic bread.  We cooked together, sat around the table, and just enjoyed each other’s company.  This was truly a time that I wish we could do all the time.  We made a pact to at least do this once a month with all the roommates together.  Let’s hope it happens.

My roommates (minus one) on the first day of school.

I thank God for days like this, and for the friendships he’s allowed me to have during the time here at Baylor!
