Heading Home

By Avery Jackson

It’s starting to hit me that this is my very last semester of college, of school, and of Baylor. These are also my last few weeks of “freedom” before the realities of the real world hit.

For the first time in my life I am faced with the reality that in the future, I won’t be able to go home and celebrate every holiday with my family. I’m from Indiana, and I am planning to move to Florida after I graduate and take a job at a scuba dive shop. I will also not be able to see the family of friends that have worked so hard to maintain at Baylor as often as I do now. This means I cannot just skip class to go home or get a few extra days off. I cannot just text one of my friends to come over to study and eat ice cream and just talk about life.

If college has taught me one thing, it’s that home is a luxury I need to visit as often, and for as long, as I can. It has also made clear that friends mean everything. Baylor is an amazing school in the ways it promotes family. Everything about it is family oriented and centered around your “adopted” family made up of students and faculty alike.

When you come to Baylor, come with the mindset that you will meet people that you will never want to let go of. Spend as much time with these people! Skip a class or two if it means flying or driving home early to spend time with your parents and siblings. Use this free time to make lasting memories with the people who mean the most to you.

Spring Goes Faster than Fall

By Avery Jackson

It has been less than one month of school, but already I’m wondering where the time went! I know many seniors feel the opposite, that graduation is a far off date in the future they will never reach, but to me, it couldn’t be closer.

Looking back on the previous three years at Baylor makes me realize I don’t want my stay here to end. Coming into college as a freshman is beyond exciting, but you feel as though you have forever left at your school. Your senior year sneaks up on you out of nowhere, and then you try to hold onto the experience as long as you can.

I’m savoring my last 15 hours of class, those late night runs for McDonald’s or pizza, and the cram sessions in the library with some of my favorite people.  After May, I won’t get to have these moments anymore.

College is an amazing opportunity to explore who you are as a person and to make incredible memories. Don’t waste your time here! Get out and enjoy!

Last First Semester

I cannot believe that Thanksgiving is already here…my last Thanksgiving as a collage student.

This past semester has been, in many ways, one of my most fulfilling semesters I’ve had in college. I have my core group of friends – people I can truly count on to be there for me no matter what. They have done so much to prove this, through actions and not just words.

My classes have emphasized what I have learned my past three years at Baylor. My strengths are obvious now, and I know what I truly love doing! I have had more projects than tests, and my projects are more than a pass or fail grade by a teacher. I am working with actual clients who need flyers, posters, videos and more. My work has to be strong, or my clients won’t be happy.

I have also gotten the opportunity to sell my art, something that was just a dream a few years ago. It’s humbling to see my dream turn into reality.

When it hits you that it is the beginning of the end in college, you can’t help but want to slow down the graduation process. May is a long way away, but if this fall semester has shown me anything, it’s that time does fly when you’re having fun.

Balancing Act

By Avery Jackson

Now that the fall semester is more than halfway over, project deadlines and finals are looming in the near future. Sometimes it can be hard to balance a crazy class schedule with free time, and by free time, I mean your passion in life.

My passion is painting. I love everything about it, from the smell of a new canvas to the feel of the paint on my hands. It’s very soothing to me.

I have found that I am the most productive when I spread out my course work and add in some fun. Here’s an example of a typical study afternoon for me. First, I will paint the background on my canvas. Then, while it dries, I will begin my paper for my Religion class. Halfway through my paper, I will switch back and begin the outline of my animal or whatever I feel like painting. I will let that dry and finish up my paper. Then, I’ll move onto my next assignment, like starting on designs for a class project in one of my Public Relations courses.

By breaking my work up into 30-45 minute chunks, I am able to get everything done and STILL enjoy my life!

Balance is the key to college! Of course I don’t have time to paint everyday, but it relaxes me and makes me happy! Find your happy thing and incorporate it into your life.

Being Where I’m Meant to Be

By Avery Jackson

One of the many reasons Baylor stood out to me above all other universities was the high level of school spirit, especially during Homecoming. At Baylor, Homecoming is an even bigger event than Christmas! Alumni of Baylor and families of students from all over come to see Pigskin, marvel at the parade floats, watch the big home game and spend quality time with the Baylor family for a weekend.

I remember the first time I visited Baylor and the moment when I realized that I wanted to go here one day. I was nine years old, and my dad and I were watching the big parade by the Bear Habitat. I was clutching my fancy Baylor leather notebook that law students and business professionals (like my dad) use, when I told him this was where I was going to go to school.

Now, it took traveling around the world, transferring from another university and earning an academic scholarship to get me here, but I can honestly say there is no other school for me.

Victory Lap

By Avery Jackson

Senior year has finally come! I’m on what some people call a victory lap – this means that it took me five years instead of four to graduate. However, I am no less excited!

I spent my summer as a nomad in Valparaiso, Indiana, working for a non-profit called Kids Alive International. This summer, I wore many hats! I created online newsletters, used my graphic design skills, took photos, wrote and edited stories, made donor presentations and did many hours of research on corporate matching gifts. I did the vast majority of the impact reports on both the countries we serve in as well as our previous site projects and fundraising events. I loved every minute!

In addition to the 40 hours I spent in the office, I also thrived outside of it as well. I made friends and explored Chicago, Wyoming and even Florida. I also had some much-needed family time with my parents and three youngest siblings, rode horses and trains, swam in the great lakes and even managed to squeeze in some concerts.

However, during my three months of summer, I stayed in SEVEN different homes. I basically lived out of my suitcase. That was an adventure in itself!

I loved getting to spend time with my siblings!

Driving with my dad and my fearless feline, Jezber, back to Waco from Indiana was a relief. Baylor has really become my home. I began to feel excited and energized the closer I got to my art-filled apartment. After my fourth major internship, I now know that I have many of the skills I need to survive in the “real world.”

Building Your Future

By Avery Jackson

One really cool thing about being in college (and specifically Baylor) is that you learn how to be prepared for the job search when you graduate. I still have one more year of school, but I have already built my online portfolio in addition to two different printed versions. A portfolio is something you put together that shows your graphic design skills, your writing skills, photography work and YouTube videos you have created, no matter if it was for work or for fun. You can also show what you did for a summer internships or other jobs to give a potential boss an idea of what you can do. You package this up with your resume and cover letter, as well as letters of recommendation, and take it with you to a job interview.

In two of my classes this semester, this was my final exam. Both classes were simply there to help me build up my portfolio and learn how to put it together. I have already gotten a summer internship in Valparaiso, Indiana, with Kids Alive International as a communications/marketing intern, and it is a full-time paid position! I was able to send them to my online site to see some of my skills in writing and design, and it impressed them enough to hire me as their first intern!

Once you start at Baylor, a majority of your classes will have projects or papers you can include in your own professional portfolio, and who know, you might just land your dream job because of a project you did in your first couple years in school!

Check out some of the pages of my portfolio!

From Baylor, to Peru and Back!

By Avery Jackson

IMG_2197

I just got back from spending a little more than a week in Peru (Yes, the country in South America!). I can honestly say that it was one of the most meaningful things I have ever gotten to do! I went with the organization Kids Alive International to see what they have been doing to help the people in Peru, specifically the children and the mothers. While there, I spent time in several different types of climates and atmospheres, including Lima (the coast), Pulcallpa (the jungle), Cuzco and Machu Picchu (the mountains) and Manchay (the dessert).

I was able to see several of the projects there, including the Oasis Care Center, the Juniper Tree Children’s Home and The Pulcallpa Care Center. I did not need to raise money to go to Peru, but I was asked to bring items for classrooms and homes like sleeping bags, colored pencils, etc. I decided to put my public relations major to good use and ask companies here in Waco for donations! In less than five days, I had donations of school supplies and sports equipment from OfficeMax, Crop-Paper-Scissors, Wal-Mart and Baylor too!

IMG_2123

I ended up taking two crammed packed suitcases and a backpack filled to the brim with all of the supplies including: 9 sports balls, more than 1,000 pencils, 87 boxes of crayons, 150 glue sticks and much more!

I am following up with my donors by writing them a thank you letter and photos from my trip! I even got the kids to hold up thank you signs to give to each of my donors as well!

I loved being able to use my major to do impactful things for others. What a great experience!

Projects and Celebrations

By Avery Jackson

Spring Break is finally upon us! Unfortunately, that means midterms and projects as well. One of the fun things about being a Journalism, Public Relations & New Media major is that a lot of my midterms are just huge projects. Instead of memorizing pages of information for a test, I get to spend my all-nighters being creative on a computer.

I JUST completed a three minute video for a class and also for my work (Crop-Paper-Scissors) as well as some posters and info cards. Below are two things I’ve been working on recently. The first is a poster I had to make for my class while the second is a picture of the beginning stages of my business cards. I hand-drew the birds and the flowers.

So. Much. Fun! But of course, so much work.

As I walked to my class this morning, I was complaining to myself about the cold and the fact that I didn’t make myself coffee. But then I realized that I was so blessed. I get to play and not have to worry about a nine to five job just yet. By “play,” I mean I get to learn all sorts of new software and create amazing designs and images!

College is such a great, fantastic time to learn things you NEVER considered learning! I have never ever liked computers, and I just bought a new one. Now, I can put tons of software on it that I can use on my own as well as for school.

Yeah, I am happy Spring Break is around the corner, but honestly Baylor has been wonderful! I feel like I am really learning stuff that can help me do my dream job one day.

Real-Life Love Story

By Avery Jackson

This week is dedicated to love. Valentine’s Day is about showing love and appreciation to those close to you, be it to a friend, a family member or a sweetheart (I guess cats count too).

Just yesterday, a man walked into Crop-Paper-Scissors, the store where I am a public relations intern, and wanted to buy something special, not just for Valentines Day, but for his 15th anniversary with his longtime girlfriend.

He had plans to ask her to marry him! And (fingers crossed), we hope she said yes! (Pretty sure she did!) He picked out some fun scrapbook paper to write a letter on and some more paper to write some little love notes. He also bought one of our tall picture frames to clip photos of the two of them with their family as well as some of the little notes he made.

It was just such a cool experience to help him with his proposal! And, it was fun watching a real-life love story unfold! I love the fact that Baylor pushes you to take classes like this where crazy things happen!

If you like people and enjoy writing, check out the Journalism, Public Relations & New Media program at Baylor. Its worth it!
